8th Grade Promotion Requirements
Culver City Unified School District
CULVER CITY MIDDLE SCHOOL
8TH GRADE PROMOTION ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS
Eighth grade students must meet the following eligibility requirements in order to participate in the Culver City Middle School promotion ceremony and related end-of-the-year promotion activities.
PROMOTION TO NINTH GRADE is based upon the student's completion of the eighth grade curriculum, state standards, and State/District assessments. According to administrative regulation at the end of eighth grade, a student who fails a combined total of four or more subjects on the first and second semester report cards risks the privilege of being promoted to the ninth grade. This means that a student must achieve a grade of at least D in a minimum of nine of his/her total classes on the first and second semester report cards. Students who do not meet promotion standards must attend summer school.
In order to participate in the EIGHTH GRADE PROMOTION ACTIVITIES at the end of the year, a student must earn satisfactory grades in achievement, citizenship, and work habits on all report cards, beginning with the first quarter report card. The specific requirements are outlined below:
OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE-UP FAILING GRADES:
• Students who earn an F on any quarter or semester report card will be required to attend 3.0 hours of school intervention programs a week. The following INTERVENTIONS will fulfill a student's mandatory 3.0 hours a week: Saturday Success Academy, Advisor/Advisee, Before/After School Tutoring Programs and other programs deemed appropriate by school administration.
• Hours will be logged on an "intervention card" which will be turned into the counselor on a weekly basis. Students who fall behind in required intervention hours will be required to meet with his/her counselor to schedule a make-up plan.
• When a student receives a report card without an F grade on the semester or third quarter report card, he/she will immediately be removed from the mandatory intervention program.
• Students who successfully complete the mandatory intervention program will be allowed to participate in the promotion ceremony and eighth grade field trip.
• Those students who are placed on the mandatory intervention program during the Spring 10 week period, as well as those students who remain on the program from a previous grading period, will not be allowed to participate in the 8th grade field trip.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Students who receive a total of five or more U marks/grades in citizenship on the Fall 10 week report card, the first semester report card, and the Spring 10 week report card will be excluded from promotion and all related activities. Tardies to homeroom/class influence a student's citizenship grade. Students with five or more tardies in homeroom/class will receive a U mark.
• Students who receive two or more home suspensions will be excluded from promotion and all related activities.
• Students must be clear from all financial obligations to the school. If a student owes for books or cafeteria charges, they will receive a notice of financial obligation and not a certificate of promotion at the ceremony on June 18, 2010. The certificate of promotion will be given to the student once the financial obligations are fulfilled.
• Any case that involves special circumstances may be reviewed by a faculty committee.
THE 8TH GRADE PROMOTION CEREMONY will be held on the last day of school on Friday at 10:30 a.m. on the high school football field. Guests must have a ticket to attend and each eligible 8th grade student may request up to a maximum of six tickets for the promotion ceremony. Ticket request forms will be distributed the last week in May. As you make plans for the promotion ceremony, please remember this is not a formal occasion. Appropriate attire would include: (girls) afternoon dress (no strapless), skirt and blouse, low-heeled shoes; (boys) sport shirt, dress pants, tie and jacket (optional).
