Recommended Summer Practice for Incoming 7th Graders
All Students:
Accelerated Math 7 Students:
In addition to skills mentioned above, also focus on calculating with Integers and solving One- and Two-Step Equations with ease.
Building fluency means that you are able to work with ease on these types of problems and consistently reach the correct answers. This takes time and practice. Set a goal to practice these foundational skills for at least 10 minutes each day. You will be amazed at the progress you will make over the summer!
You may continue to use your IXL account during the summer. Search for the topics above in either the Grade 6 or Grade 7 sections.

Dear Students and Families,
Happy Holidays!! J I hope that you enjoy a fun and relaxing vacation. There is no official homework over the winter break. However, here are some suggestions if you are thinking about practicing math.
Sincerely, Mrs. Bergonzi

Practice for the CAASPP Tests: In the spring, students will take the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in Math and Language Arts. Practicing the released questions helps you to know how the questions will be asked and what kinds of questions will appear. Go to http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/ and click on the green box (Student Interface) to find the sample tests and tasks. Click through the pre-filled “Guest” pages, choose “Grade 6” and then select a practice test.
Review What You Have Learned: Look over your class notes and Unit Assessments to review the concepts that we have learned so far this year. These concepts are Unit 1: Ratios, Rates, & Conversions, Unit 2: Percent, Unit 3: Integers, Unit 4: Graphing on the Coordinate Plane; and Unit 5: Rational Numbers – Decimals (this is our current unit).

2) Final Defenses for the first semester will be offered on the following dates. These will occur after school in Room 121.
Defense Dates (choose one):
Monday, December 11
Thursday, December 14
Reminder: The new Defense score will replace the original Unit Test score, regardless of whether the score goes up or down. Be sure to prepare!
Sign-ups for Defenses will be in Room 121. Be sure to get your name on the list and check with Mrs. Bergonzi if you need ideas on how to prepare and practice.
If you are unable to make these after school times, please see Mrs. Bergonzi and we will figure another Defense date for you.
There is no specific homework that will be assigned for Thanksgiving Break. However, if you have the time, practice working on problems on the Coordinate Plane:
1) Look at the Coordinate Plane section of the Math Textbook (Volume 1, Pages 403-419). The answers to the odd numbered problems can be found in the back of the textbook.
2) IXL Math – Great practice site for the basics! Use your new username and password. www.ixl.com/signin/culvercityms
Select the Coordinate Plane section in the 6th Grade Skills area.
3) Khan Academy - This site has a combination of video instruction and practice problems
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/basic-geo/basic-geo-coord-plane#coordinate-plane-4-quad
The Unit 4 Test on the Coordinate Plane will be on Thurs/Friday, Nov 30 or Dec 1st.
Choice 1: Math textbook Page 419. Record responses in your math notebook.
Choice 2: Make your own treasure hunt map (like the one we did in class today) on a Coordinate Plane.
- It must have at least 4 clues
- Must have clues in all 4 quadrants of the coordinate plane.
- Include vocabulary like ordered pairs, origin, and quadrants in your clues.
- Include directions like north, south, east, and west.
1) HW05 - Adding and Subtracting Integers
2) Finish in the Real World Mini-Poster assignment (due Monday)
1) Grow Toy Review
Did the results of the Grow Toy investigation align with what you thought would
happen? In what ways did the grow toy actually grow? Did the toy grow up to 600%
as advertised on the box?
On a separate sheet of binder paper, write review of this product.
YOU WILL TURN THIS PAPER IN ON MONDAY.
o Clearly explain whether or not the toy grew up to 600% as advertised. Include
mathematical calculations to justify your conclusions.
o Make some closing remarks about the toy (e.g.; positive comments,
disappointing aspects, things that surprised you about the toy,
recommendations to others who are thinking about buying this toy, etc.).
2) List at least 2 examples of negative numbers being used in the real world.
Important Note: Students will be getting their Unit 1 Tests back on Monday, Oct 2. Students who are not content with their test score will have the opportunity to take a defense of the Unit 1 Test on Monday, October 9 (after school in Room 121) OR on Tuesday, October 17 (after school in Room 121). Students taking a Defense MUST attend PAWs on Thursday, October 5th. See Mrs. Bergonzi's homepage POST for more information.
Percents Are All Around Us!
Percentages are a very important part of our world. They are used in sports, science, cooking, health & fitness, medicine, and many other areas.
Here are some interesting percentages:
- It is estimated that only 2% of the world’s population has green colored eyes.
- A wild giant panda’s diet is almost exclusively (99%) bamboo.
- There are some ice creams that are 75% air.
- Last year, the Dodgers won 56% of their games.
Do a little research and come up with 2 more examples that we can add to the list above. Be creative! Find interesting statistics that involve the use of percentages.

NOTE TO PARENTS:
This week we will complete our second formative assessment in math class (Goal Problems #2) related to solving ratio problems. This is NOT part of a student's math grade, but scores will be entered on Aeries to show students and parents how well the student is performing on this specific learning target. The assessment will be returned to students on Thurs/Fri and can be used as a study guide for improvement.
Scores:
4: Student work shows a solid understanding of ratio concepts.
3: Student work shows a good understanding of ratio concepts. The student may have made minor errors, or needs practice in working on problems that have fractional parts.
2: Student work shows some understanding of ratio concepts. The student needs more practice (See online options below and/or come to PAWs on Thursday)
1: Student work shows little understanding of ratio concepts. The student needs help and more practice (See online options below and come to PAWs on Thursday)
Students who have earned scores below a “3” could build their understanding of ratios by:
1) View the short videos below and try the practice problems.
Visualize Ratios on Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre-algebra/pre-algebra-ratios-rates/pre-algebra-visualize-ratios/e/ratios-with-double-number-lines
2) Retry Goal Problems #2.
3) Come to PAWs on Thursday, September 14th.
1) View the short video below to learn more about writing ratios.
Intro to Ratios:
2) Complete the practice problems:
Basic Ratios:
3) Retry the Goal Problems #1 assignment by clicking on the link below and printing another copy of the handout. Use the answer key to correct your work.
2) Students will be receiving their math textbooks on Thurs/Fri, Sept 7th or 8th during math class time. These books come in TWO volumes and are paperback, consumable texts.
It may be helpful for students to bring a separate bag to school on Thurs/Fri to help in carrying the books home. The 2 books are bulky and will not likely fit in backpacks that are already full.
Students will be able to KEEP these books and write directly in them. We will not be using the books during class time, so books should remain at home.
Students should feel free to use the books at ANY TIME for extra practice and review of skills. The problems in the textbook can be used as a nice supplement to our daily homework assignments.
