Assignment

Recommended Summer Practice for Incoming 7th Graders

All Students:

  • Work on fluency in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with Decimals and Fractions. This includes calculating with Mixed Numbers too.
  • Simplify Numerical Expressions using order of operations, including examples with positive Exponents.
  • Continue to strengthen your skills in solving Ratio, Rate, and Percent problems.

Accelerated Math 7 Students:

In addition to skills mentioned above, also focus on calculating with Integers and solving One- and Two-Step Equations with ease.

Building fluency means that you are able to work with ease on these types of problems and consistently reach the correct answers.  This takes time and practice.  Set a goal to practice these foundational skills for at least 10 minutes each day.  You will be amazed at the progress you will make over the summer!

You may continue to use your IXL account during the summer.  Search for the topics above in either the Grade 6 or Grade 7 sections.

7th Grade Placement Note:

Students who demonstrate satisfactory work habits in Math 6 and earn an A in the Math 6 class for Semester 1 and the 3rd Quarter may request the opportunity to take a placement test at the end of the school year to determine readiness for placement into Accelerated Math 7 in seventh grade.

The placement will be given after school on Thursday, May 31st (Room 121). Please note that this option will require additional study and preparation by the student as many of the standards required for Accelerated Math 7 are not taught in the Math 6 class. The attached packet will let you see the skills that will be assessed on the placement test. Please contact your child’s math teacher for additional information.

Dear Students and Families,

Happy Holidays!! J I hope that you enjoy a fun and relaxing vacation.  There is no official homework over the winter break.  However, here are some suggestions if you are thinking about practicing math.

Sincerely, Mrs. Bergonzi

IXL Skills Practice: https://www.ixl.com/signin/culvercityms

  •       Practice skills related to our current unit (Geometry). Select practice in the 6th grade area “Geometric Measurement” related to perimeter and area (Sections FF.1 to FF.6).
  •      Students in Math 6 should be able to fluently calculate with decimals and whole numbers. Select practice in the 6th grade area related to Whole Numbers (Section A, B, and C), Decimals (Sections F, G, and H) and Mixed Operations    (Section O.1 to O.6) to hone these skills.

Common Fractions, Decimals, and Percents:

Use flashcards or other methods to memorize these fraction, decimal, and percent conversions.

Practice for the CAASPP Tests: In the spring, students will take the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in Math and Language Arts.  Practicing the released questions helps you to know how the questions will be asked and what kinds of questions will appear.  Go to http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/ and click on the green box (Student Interface) to find the sample tests and tasks. Click through the pre-filled “Guest” pages, choose “Grade 6” and then select a practice test.

Review What You Have Learned: Look over your class notes, Goal Problems, and Unit Assessments to review the concepts that we have learned so far this year.  These concepts are Unit 1: Ratios, Rates, & Conversions, Unit 2: Percent, Unit 3: Whole Number and Decimal Fluency, Unit 4: Numerical Expressions, and Unit 5: Geometry (this is our current unit).

  •      There are a lot of online videos that you could watch. One website that is very popular for instructional videos and extra practice is The Khan Academy. http://www.khanacademy.org/
  •      Check the CCMS website (ccms.ccusd.org), and specifically Mrs. Bergonzi’s page, for additional practice opportunities. Redo previous homework assignments, or scroll through the posts and look for a wide-variety of practice websites and handouts to complete.

Percents Are All Around Us!

Percentages are a very important part of our world. They are used in sports, science, cooking, health & fitness, medicine, and many other areas.

Here are some interesting percentages:

- It is estimated that only 2% of the world’s population has green colored eyes.

- A wild giant panda’s diet is almost exclusively (99%) bamboo.

- There are some ice creams that are 75% air.

- Last year, the Dodgers won 56% of their games.

Do a little research and come up with 2 more examples that we can add to the list above. Be creative! Find interesting statistics that involve the use of percentages.

Students who need help in building their understanding of ratios can do the following:

a) View the short video below to learn more about writing ratios.

Students will be able to KEEP these books and write directly in them. We will not be using the books during class time, so books should remain at home.

Students should feel free to use the books at ANY TIME for extra practice and review of skills. The problems in the textbook can be used as a nice supplement to our daily homework assignments.
