Today the students received their study guide for their Ancient Greece Unit exam which will take place next week On Tuesday and Wednesday. I had already mentioned the exam to the students last week Today in class, they completed two handouts to review for the test. One worksheet was comparing and contrasting Athens and Sparta (ppt is posted on the website) and the other worksheet is reviewing all the contributions we received from the Greeks. On Monday they will have a Kahoot review game. The unit exam will focus on geography questions, greek governments, and Athens and Sparta. I am attaching the study guide and worksheets below.

Yesterday in class we began to learn about the different types of government in ancient Greece. Students were completing reading notes along with their reading. Their reading notes are due today (for periods 3/5) and due tomorrow (for periods 4/6). Students viewed a documentary today on Ancient greek titled Time life's Lost Civilizations: Greece: A moment of Excellence. They had 15 questions to respond to which we completed in class and was collected at the end of the period. I did edit parts of the video where I felt it might be considered inappropriate for class for some parents (due to reference/images of traditions and practices at the time in Ancient Greece). I am attaching both handouts, they are also on our class website.

I apologize for not posting much this week. I was out for 2 days. Let me attempt to recap what the kids worked on this week: 
 
Monday: We completed a summary on the impact of the Silk Road that began in China 
 
Tuesday/Wednesday: They completed a geography reading along with a handout with questions on A.Greece. They were assigned new vocabulary for Greece (Due Monday, they will have a spelling quiz on Monday for it with extra credit questions based on their geography reading). Our China unit was cut short due to timing :( 
 
Thursday/Friday: We reviewed geography with watching two videos and then discussing their handout. We completed class with a geography map on Greece (they will have a quiz on Thursday/Friday based on this Geography map)

Yesterday and today in class, students turned in their classwork on the stations of the Origins of Judaism. After we reviewed each station, I showed the students a quick video on the Story of Judaism. The students viewed the video 3x. We were including vocabulary and notes as we viewed each time. For homework (due on Monday), I would like the students to provide a 1-2 paragraph summary on the video. They could include additional notes if they have their own prior knowledge or based on our stations activity.

Hi P3-P6, Today we reviewed our Empires of Mesopotamia chart. The ppt is on our class website (msmadridsocialstudies.weebly.com) in case any students missed any details or where absent. We also talked about Hammurabi's Code of Law and discussed some laws. The students then had an exit slip about Hammurabi. I am attaching all of the assignments reviewed and completed in class. 
 
I also told the students that they have their unit exam on the last two days of school before winter break. If any student will be absent, they schedule an appointment with me to take their unit exam before they leave. If students do not take the Unit exam, it will be a 0 and there will be no make ups when we return because the semester ends on December 22nd. 
 
Just a friendly reminder that it is the student's responsibility to reach out to me when they are absent to make up any work that was missed. Any missed work/quizzes/tests should be completed within a day of their absence.

Yesterday and today in class we worked on an overview of Mesopotamia. Students used the chrome books to look up information about important topics in Mesopotamia. We will have Actor's Gang come in next week and the students will be acting out scenes about those topics with them. The handout is meant to prepare them for that activity. I also gave the students a practice test as homework so they can complete it before their unit exam. The unit exam will take place on Thursday, December 21st for P3 and P5 and Friday, December 22nd for P4 and P6.
 
We will be playing Kahoot next week on Monday to review for the test.
 
The students will need to turn in their Actor's gang handout on Tuesday and Wednesday before beginning their activity with Actor's gang.
 
Students will turn in their practice test on Thursday and Friday of next week before their unit exam. 
 
Tuesday--> Period 3 and Period 5 meet at Room 1
Wednesday--> Period 4 and Period 6 meet at the MPR (next to library)

Today in class we began to talk about the elements that make a civilization (7 elements). Students read a reading on it and had a handout to go with it as well. Students had to write down the definition of the element, provide an example (drawing and description) of that element in Sumer and a modern US example.

We started Mesopotamia today and yesterday. Students completed the first two boxes of their KWL chart (what they know and want to learn). We then devoted the rest of the period to begin learning the vocabulary terms for the unit. Students will have a spelling test for the 17 words (accents will count) next week on Monday and Tuesday. I will be checking vocabulary (images must be colored) on Thursday and Friday. I checked their notebooks for unit 2 yesterday and today. Period 5 is the only period that I did not get a chance to grade all of them in class because it’s my largest period—-at 34 students. I will continue to check their notebooks tomorrow and Thursday.

Today in class (10/31), students worked on the Neolithic era. We reviewed our hominids chart and then began our reading on the neolithic era. The students are creating a "comic" as we go through the reading. They should have the first 3 pages completed by next class periods. Some students were able to complete it in class while others have a lot to complete at home and some have just a question or two to do. All depends on the students pace. I am attaching the reading and comic as well. I have also uploaded some videos to our class website to help students understand the topics we are covering in class better. I have also been telling the students to begin studying for their Unit exam on early hominids next week. It will take place on Wednesday and Thursday as there will be no class on Friday. Homework for today is for students to continue to read their article and annotate it properly. After that, they are expected to complete questions 1-6. I know some students lose their materials so I am attaching it here. Also, if you haven't already turned in your signed Unit 1 exam (reviewed with parents), please make sure you turn it in by the end of the week. 
 
Steps to complete reading: 
1. Number paragraphs (13 total) 
2. Circle words you don't understand in blue, look up definition and/or synonym and write it in the margins 
3. Read each paragraph and underline the main idea of the paragraph in red. 
4. Highlight supporting details of the main idea with a yellow highlighter. 
 
Also quick reminders for students: 
1. if you are using class materials such as scissors, glue, highlighters, pens and pencils, it is expected that you return those materials for other students who have to use them as well. At the moment, we are out of pencils but we started the school year with about 40. Please return materials so others can use them!

Today I distributed their rubric for their interactive notebook. I will be grading their notebooks on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. I reviewed the categories of the rubric and asked the students that as homework over the weekend they reviewed their notebook and made sure they had  it in order correctly and complete. I am attaching the rubric. Also I have been working on creating a class website to make sure the students have somewhere to reference whenever they are absent or didn't understand something in class. I just wanted to share the following exhibits that two parents shared with me (thank you!) as an opportunity to attend a cultural event that relates to Spanish. 
 
I know some of my 8th graders are working on the biliteracy seal and one of the requirements ask that they attend a cultural event relating to the target language (Spanish) or complete volunteer hours where the target language is spoken. So the following exhibits would be great for students to attend to fulfill the requirement.

Revealing complexities both on and off the island, Cuba Is explores aspects of Cuba not easily accessed by foreigners, and sometimes not even by Cubans themselves. Born from indigenous, African and European roots, divergent politics and limitations in communication and commerce, the Cuba seen in this exhibition goes beyond the folklore and offers new insight into its current reality. The students had homework assigned today (Sept. 14th), to complete a world map over the weekend and color it! The students will be working on a geography unit in class till Wednesday of next week. It is encouraged that the students become familiar with a world map and are able to know the continents, oceans, equator and hemispheres. If using the textbook, please refer to pg. A6-A7 for a world map with continents, oceans and equator. Refer to pg. 18 for the hemispheres. Students will be taking notes on this information this week but if they need to refer to the book for additional support, they should use the above pages. Thank you!
