CC11 and CC12 scores will be posted on Wednesday afternoon.  Please check your child's grades and discuss the option of defenses.  Both handouts are due on Thur/Fri.  Defenses begin next week.  Defense packets for CC7-9 were handed out today.  Defense packets for CC10-12 will be available on Thurs/Fri.

  Today, in class, I handed out a form with your child's math placement recommendation for next year.  Based on data, we have found that students who earn a grade of B or better in both semester of Accelerated 7th are successful the following year in Algebra.  Those who earn below a B are struggling to maintain a grade of C.  With the data in mind, I have made recommendations based on your child's performance in Acc 7th this year.  Please sign the form and have your child return it to school on Tues/Wed.  If you disagree with my recommendation and would like to discuss the placement, please include an email address or phone number where I can contact you.

 Each student received a blue and pink handout today which explain the defense process for the class.  Unit 2 assessments will be administered next Mon-Wed.  I will return all tests back on Thursday and Friday.  Students will then be able to complete the pink form and know their grade in the class.  If they (or you) are not happy with the grade, the student may choose to defend  one or more categories.  The defenses will take place AFTER winter break.  The dates and requirements are on the blue handout.  ALL students must turn in a signed pink paper on January 4th.  Students who wish to defend, must also turn in the signed blue paper.

 

  There will not be any ASSIGNED homework for the next week.  Students should use this time to practice for the assessments.  I suggest they redo their quick checks and goal problems.

Some students wanted to practice scientific notation word problems.  I have attached a practice sheet with answers

  I have entered the scores for the CC6 Assessment which was taken today.  I have also changed the scores from the quick checks for CC4 and CC5 to "Formative" so they no longer are figured in to the grade.  Therefore, the current class grade you see on Aeries, is the average of CC1, CC2, CC3 and CC6.  Students will take CC4 and CC5 tomorrow and Wednesday, and then their final semester grade can be calculated.

 

Institute will be held today (Monday) after school and Tuesday before school.

 

I have also uploaded the defense packets to Canvas for CC1, CC2, and CC3.  Students MUST complete all pages in the packet (file) in order to defend a concept category.

This is a new topic for students and some are having difficulty.  ixl.com is a great practice tool for this topic.  Try 7th grade T.6 to start and then progress to 8th grade U.6 and U.7

 

Due to a special Career Day event, next week's schedule is 2, 4, 6 on Monday; 1, 3, 5 on Tuesday, and stack schedule on Wednesday

 

This is a review of 6th grade concepts.  Students should know how to solve 1-step equations before we begin our new concept category on Th/Fri.  Students can practice these skills on ixl.com  6th grade Y.7 and Y.11 and 8th grade U.5 and U.8

 

CC5 Quick Check scores will be posted by this evening.  This score will be replaced when we take the Unit Assessment before the winter break.

 

I've also attached the totem pole that we did in class today for review.

 

Please check the portal this weekend.  I have posted the scores for the past two sets of goal problems that we have done in class.  (They DO NOT COUNT towards the grade).  The scores are based on a rubric from 0-4 (0 represents an "NY").  This should give you and your child a sense of what they know and don't know so they can appropriately practice for the CC5 assessment which will be given on Mon (period 2) and Tues (periods 1 &3).

 

I will have a general review session for all concept categories at Institute next week. I still need a pack of napkins :)

CC5 - Exponents Assessment will be next Mon (period 2) and Tues (periods 1 & 3).  Students should be practicing combining like terms, distributing, factoring, word problems with expressions, evaluating expressions.  There have been plenty of worksheets handed out over the past two weeks that students can practice.

 

There has been a good turnout for Institute on Mondays after school and Tuesdays before school.  I have been providing snacks using the extra ixl money.  Thank you!

 

On a side note:  Could use a few boxes of tissue (runny noses are starting...) and a pack of napkins!

Accelerated Math 7 Institute has begun!  Classes will be held on Mondays from 2:35-3:20 for students with 0 period PE and on Tuesdays from 7:30-8:15 for all other students.  Students must be on time and remain for the entire class.

 

My students spent over 23 hours on ixl.com last week doing 4,688 problems!  Forty families contributed to the fund with 4 families donating $100 each.  Thank you!!!  I collected $1294 and the cost of the subscription was $900.  With that being said, I have two options of what I could do with the extra money.  1)  Give the $394 to Panther Partners and ask that the earmark the money for something to be used in class at a later date. Or 2) use the extra money to provide snacks for students who attend Institute.  In the past, I have used my own money to pay for these.  If you have an opinion, one way or the other, please email me at kelleywilcox@ccusd.org

Beginning next week (Oct 12), I will be holding an Accelerated 7th Institute class on Mondays after school and Tuesdays before school for those students who are achieving below 75%.  I strongly encourage you to have your child attend one of these sessions each week until their grade improves.  It is imperative for success in this class that students master the concepts of Integers and Rational Numbers.

 

Students whose scores are above 75% may attend IF there is space available.

These worksheets are in preparation of Monday's lesson on operations with rational numbers (positive and negative fractions and decimals).  By next week, students at mastery level should be proficient with both integers and fractions.  If your child is struggling, there is plenty of extra practice available on the website, ixl.com.  Every child has had the opportunity to pick up a username and password that can be used for the next two weeks.

 

Students took a fraction diagnostic test in class today.  Please check the portal for the score.  Students must master operations with fractions by next week before we begin working with negative fractions.

 

Parents, please check the parent portal for your child's score on today's assessment.  There will be no changing of class level (Accelerated to Math 7) allowed after next week.

 

Our first recorded assessment will be this Th/Fri.  Students should be practicing.  Students in periods 1 and 2 can come see me for an ixl.com password.

 

Students will take an assessment on Friday that will help to determine their progress in the class.  The assessment will cover the topics we have covered during the first two weeks of school.  Scores will be posted on the parent portal.  Scores will not count as a grade, but will be an indication of each student's achievement level in the class.  

 

We worked on adding and subtracting integers today.  If you are having difficulty, please visit ixl.com.  You can do 20 problems a day for free.  kutasoftware is also a good source of problems with answers.
