Just 34 days left of school and all of you are going to be 7th graders  OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!

What is happening the week of May 9th to the 13th.

Well I hope that all of you had a chance to tell your parents at least one of the Greek myths that was told in class, not only told them but explained them too!

Well this week we will continue and complete Ancient Greece "A moment of Excellence," then take the open note quiz.  We should be able to finish the DVD by tomorrow, then Segway into the Movie "Clash of the Titans, the original 1980 version of the mythical legend of Perseus and his quest to save his beloved Andromeda.

Before movie I will be introducing the role of women in Greece, the Underworld Hades with the Elysian Fields, Tartarus, the River Styx, the three judges, Charon the Ferryman and the god Apollo.

This movie will be the 4th myth about Ancient Greece. After these myths have been told you will be doing an assignment choosing one of the four myths to write about. Don't loses any of the notes that explain what we talked about. You will need them.

Mrs. Halloran has created a Common Core Greek test that will be given within the next two weeks. Don't worry about it I will make sure all will be prepared before we take it.

Democracy, Oligarchy, Monarchy, tyrant, and Aristocracy

Compare and contrasting

      Oh my gosh, can you believe that 3^rd quarter is ending in one more week!!!!!!!!!!! This is insane, next Friday will be that last day of CCMS’ third quarter, and when we return to school there will be only 10 weeks of s school left.

WASHINGTON D.C. AND COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG

     For those of you going to Washington D.C. and Colonial Williamsburg, during the first week of Spring Break I bet all of you are so excited, I am. This is going to be a most memorable trip ever.  We leave on a Red Eye on Sunday and will return on Saturday next week.  This is going to be an awesome learning experience.

     For those kids not going, don’t fret parents, I am going again next year but, this next trip will most likely be Boston and New York. I open this trip to 6th, 7th and 8th graders.  Open enrollment will happen when I get back from this years trip.  I will set up signups and registrations for all students and parents who would like to participate in the 2016-2017 Spring Break trip.

What’s happening the final week March 21^st to the 25^th, in Mr. Garcia’s 6^th grade social studies class?

 Monday:

      Any missed assignments that have not been turned in, by Monday your DEADLINE will not be accepted after 2:30 p.m. For students who are receiving below a “C”, I made a packet for you. This packet is due Monday so, please, please, please do your best and finish it up and turn it in on Monday so I can raise your overall class grade.  After 2:30 p.m. I will not accept any more work.

     We will be finishing up Time Life’s “Dynasties of Powers” quiz and correcting it. Remember if you want to watch the movie again, you can go to YouTube and search for “Dynasties of Powers,” and re-watch the video. Remember as always you may use all notes taken while you were watching in class. 

Tuesday and Wednesday:

     This will take me the entire period, but I will be telling you and Ancient Chinese horror story of “Wang Fu”, and for most of you it will be a story that you will always remember. 

Thursday and Friday

     We will be doing something fun by comparing the Chinese Dragon and Western Dragon. You will be coloring this day.

Hello my amazing smart and wonderful students.  As of tomorrow we are two weeks away from Spring Break YEAH!!!!! 14 days off of rest and relaxation.  Whew, can you believe that we are coming to the end of 3^rd quarter.  Whereas all the time gone?

What’s happening this week: 

Remember we are taking the Formative Ancient Indian test.  We went over the just of the test on Thursday and Friday.  Things you should be doing that I asked you to do

• Review Chapter 7 Ancient India
• Go over all vocabulary words.

•       Know the Pyramid Caste system. Know what the English meaning is you will have a word bank on the test

• Read and know the difference between Buddhism and Hinduism and the similarity. There is on line the annotated worksheet on line, the same my Friday class did. This sheet gives you a lot of information about the similarities and differences
• Remember the Golden Age of India or the Golden age of the Guptas, and what happened during this time. A word bank will be on this topic as well. 
•  

Girls and boys, this test will in no way will be hard for any one of you.  We went over this on Thursday and Friday.   I have all the confidence in the world that you know all that is to be known about Ancient India.  GIRLS AND BOYS TRUST YOURSELF!!!!!, ALL OF YOU WILL DO GREAT ON THIS TEST.

 Other than annotating class warm ups, the rest of the week we will be watching Time Life’s Ancient China’s “Dynasties of Power.”

The Week of Feb 29^th to March 4^th

Sorry for putting this on so late. A lot of things happening today. 

Monday:    

      We will be taking a quick write on a map of India. Kids I’ve looked at the map and is will be extremely easy for all of my students. Just remember that this is a quick write, which will not in any way affect anyone’s grade.

     Your Five paragraph will be passed back today. With the exception of 6^th period all of your essay have been graded and are on line now.  

Homework

Chapter 8 Ancient China

Remember it will no longer be Cornell Notes, but annotating. Attached to this site will be the entire chapter 8. I will do my best to give you lesson 1 and 2 tomorrow. 

Periods 1, 3 and 5

Lesson 1 for period 1, 3, and 5 is due Tuesday, lesson 2 is due on Wednesday, Lesson 3 is due on Friday and Lesson 4 on Monday.

Periods 2 and 6

Lesson 1 and 2 is due Wednesday for periods 2 and 6 and lesson 3 and 4 are due on Friday.

Instruction for this assignment:

On the first page of each lesson will be your vocabulary, you must, using your social studies book define and write the definitions on the 1^st page.

Tuesday and Wednesday:

We will be starting a China Map, you will have this period to label in pencil first, have the teacher correct it, then using a black or blue per relabel your map again, once relabeled erase all pencil marks, then color in a political format.

 Thursday and Friday:

We will be viewing Time Life’s "Dynasties of Power" on Ancient China.   We will be taking notes and of course have a quiz at the end of the Video. Like always all notes written can be use while taking the quiz. Please remember that the only time extra credit will be given is when we take the quiz as a class. If you retake any quiz no extra credit will be given.

The week of February 22-26 

Attached to this email will be the Indian Cheat sheet, as I call it for all of you to get ready and choose your five topics for the Five paragraph essay on India this Thursday and Friday.

I will go over this in detail on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Students don’t freak out this essay is similar to the Egyptian five paragraph essay we did during 2^nd quarter. 

Once I explain what the Indian essay will be about, (A lot of this has already been explained mind you!) and what your job is getting ready, all of you will be coloring an Indian Mandala. You will have five Mandala’s to choose from. I will have examples for all to look at to give you an idea of what you need to do. 

On Thursday and Friday, all classes will be writing a five paragraph essay on Ancient India.

Here, are the instructions for this essay.

1. Students will choose five topics on Ancient India
   • You can use the cheat sheet attached or research your own five topics.
2. All of the information you need can be used the day of the test.
   • You may bring, and use your annotation notes, social studies book or any other first have information you may wish to bring.
   • your own research.
3. Although this is a five paragraph essay you will include an introduction and conclusion. Making the total number of paragraphs Seven. There are five Topics on Ancient India that you will choose yourself

*DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE DAY OF THE ESSAY (Thursday or Friday) TO CHOOSE YOUR TOPICS. START NOW, CHOOSE YOUR FIVE TOPICS, AND RESEARCH WHAT THEM. 

All of you are writing a 6^th grade personal historic essay based on what you have learned about the Ancient Civilization of India. There will be no plagiarism, because you are giving me your personal understanding of this civilization you have learned these past five weeks.

Things your need to watch when writing.

• Spelling
• Proper nouns (All name and countries are Capitalized)
• A period at the end of a sentence
• Frist word is always capitalized
• If you are using someone’s words you must Quote, it. “four score and seven years ago” the start of the emancipation proclamation by Abraham Lincoln is a very important phrase in American history.    This is a quote from Abraham Lincoln and is not my own words.
• Separate every finished paragraph with a space
• Use both sides of the paper

To My amazing and wonderful 6^th graders

     As the old adage says “Another day another dollar,” but in this case it’s another week. 

     To date, there are four months until the end of your 6^th grade career.  How has time flown by so fast?  Well I don’t know about you, but I am having a most fantastic year will all of you.  All of you are wonderful, and I am blessed to have each and every one of you as my students. 

What is happening the week of February 16^th to the 19^th. 

     Class works that was given out on Thursday and Friday of last week is due tomorrow, Monday Feb, 16 2016, at the beginning of class. Now there are some of you that have yet to complete the annotating worksheets we have been doing since the first day of 3^rd quarter. THIS NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED, and turned in for credit otherwise it is a “red mark on ARIES,” which is a “0” 

      I will attach all Annotations we have done on this site for those who need to work on it. Those that do not turn in the work on time have until the week before the end of third quarter to turn it in for full credit. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, remember that!!!!

Little Buddha:

We will be finishing up the movie “Little Buddha,” by Friday, and will be taking the quiz after the movie. This movie is available on Netflix if you have this, and you way watch it. We go over the life of Buddha in-depth in class though. For students who have been absent, you need to get notes from students who have already taken them, so that you will be able to do well on the quiz. You will be able to use the notes you have taken during the quiz.

5 paragraph essay on India

     When we finish the civilization of India, we will be taking a 5 paragraph essay that you will choose the topics yourself. You will be able to use all of the Annotating worksheets done in class, your books and any other information you wish to bring. Attach to this will be a review sheet about all of the topics we have gone over about Ancient India.   The essay will consist of 5 paragraphs of your choosing, an introduction and conclusion. Making this a total of 7 paragraphs. You will have an entire period to complete this essay. DON’T FREAK OUT, all of you will do great. 

     We will have an Annotating class warmup at the beginning of each class period until the end of the school year. I guarantee that you will become experts on Historical Annotating.

What’s happening this week On Ancient India?

We will be continuing the movie “Little Buddha,” a visual story on the life of Siddhartha Gautama or as he is ultimately known as the “Buddha” or “Awakened One”.

As with all movies, it does take a while to view a full movie because I am stopping and starting and explaining what is happening, and giving you quiz questions and answers. This mean my little Padwans that when the quiz is taken EVERYONE should get an “A,” because you can use your notes during the quiz.

When the Movie Ends:

Once the movie ends, we will be diving into Hinduism and the Caste system in Ancient and Modern India. We will end this civilization with an analyzation of India and the people. You will be writing a short essay on what has been learned about India.

Annotating!!!!

Just a reminder, we have started annotating this quarter and will be doing this until the end of the school year. At every class meeting I will be handing out informational documentation pertaining to what civilization we are studying at the time.   You will be given 20 minutes to complete this annotation in class.  For those students who do not finish in class must finish by the next class meeting to get their grade.

Well hello my wonderful 6^th grade students.

So, if my calculations are correct, there is a total of 19 weeks left of school including all of the schedule holidays. Wow, this is insane; time is flying at an exponential way!!!!!! WHEW!!!!!

To all students please have your chapter 7 Cornell Notes done on Lesson 1 to 4 by tomorrow. This means, Vocabulary, 3 essential question and 5 lessons 1, 2, 3, and 4 review questions. As all of you know, this is the start of the 3^rd quarter, 2^nd Semester. So, as of Monday last week all students start out with an “A” in my class. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN THIS ,“ "A"  Your grade will start to go down when thing are not completed and turned in!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember, is it not me the teacher, giving you the final grade but you. If you do all I ask, take the responsibility to remake quizzes you do not do well on, finish all in-class and homework assignments I promise you that your ultimate grade in the class will be a high B or A, Guaranteed. IF YOU DO NOT RETAKE OR COMPLETE ASSIGNED WORK, THEN THE EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE TO FINISH AND TURN ALL ASSIGNMENTS IN TO RAISE YOUR GRADE. What happening this week:

On Monday during Stack day:

We will outline our heirlglyphics, even the ones that are not completed, to complete this in class assignment. The ones that finish early will start the map on India.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Students will have this period to finish their Indian map by the end of the period. This is all of the time you will have to finish this map.   The mapmaking assignment has not changed since the start of the year.

Directions:

1. Using the directions handed out by Mr. Garcia, you will find and label all of the items, and only the items on the instructions, in pencil.
2. Once you complete the labeling your map, you must bring it up to Mr. Garcia to correct.
3. Once Mr. Garcia has corrected the map, you will then go over all of your labeling in BLUE or BLACK pen only. You will not need to bring it up to Mr. Garcia to correct again, you will then color your map. This will be a POLITIAL MAP, meaning all surrounding countries are in different colors.
4. When you color, you will color in one direction only, and not color over the labels you made, but around it.
5. All students who complete will get 100%, those who don’t will receive a “0,”

This week Jan 11 to 15

Just as a reminder, this is the final week of the 1^st semester.  On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we will be making our PowerPoint Ancient Egypt project and the physical project presentation.  On Monday I will get through about 3 to 4 groups, and then the other day’s finish up during the block periods.

If for some reason, we do not finish by Tuesday and Wednesday, we will continue and finish up on Thursday and Friday.   Semester grades are due on Friday afterschool.

I will be completing the story of Isis, Osiris, Set and Ra on Thursday and Friday.  We will also have an in class essay based on the story told.  You will be able to use your notes taken during the story.

Starting the 3^rd quarter, 2^nd Semester:

To give you a heads up, next week we will be starting Ancient India, and you will be assigned Chapter 7 on India.  Cornel notes with Vocabulary, essential questions and lesson review questions.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

It has been a year since I last saw all of you, isn't that amazing?  I pray that all of you and your families had a safe and most memorable Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa or winter break!  I was extremely happy because all of my daughters came home, and it was so noisy, exciting and fun. 

Well it’s a new year and it’s back to school.  We are coming to the end of the 1^st semester in two weeks.  I looked at a majority of all of the PowerPoint cultural projects, but there were some I could not see.   I will check on Monday with those students who did not attach me to their email.  Most of you did an awesome job and I’m extremely proud of all of you.

WHATS HAPPENING THIS WEEK.

Your physical project is due on Thursday or Friday.  Remember that the physical project can be a picture, model, mobile, movie, or anything that is related to your topic.  Better yet, surprise me, as long as what is made relates to your PowerPoint topic I will accept.

On Tuesday and Wednesday students who did not finish their Canopic Jar drawing will be doing so these two days, and on Thursday and Friday I will be telling you the Story of how the Ancient Egyptians believed how life began.  It is the story of Isis, Osiris and Set.

YOUR DEADLINE.

For all classes Thursday is your deadline to retake any quizzes you did poorly on, and Friday is the deadline to turn in all missed in class assignments such as maps, Canopic Jar drawings, or homework.  If these items missing are not turned in, then it will remain an unturned in assignment and will gravely affect your grade.  For some of you it is extremely important that you take this seriously and complete all missing assignments.

Remember your semester grade is the grade that goes on your permanent record.

What is happening this week?

                We will be delving into the Ancient Civilization of India.    The first thing will be the geography of the country of India, its natural barriers, the Indus and Ganges plateau and the multiple and river systems.

The topics for discussion and learning will be the following from Tuesday through Friday

What is due on Monday:

Your annotating sheet on Ancient India is due this day, and as I have told all of you, we will no longer be doing Cornell notes for your book work homework assignments.  Starting with Chapter 8, on ancient China the chapter will be on line so all of my students will annotate the chapter including vocabulary.

For my period 1 class, you will be annotating the worksheet handed out on Thursday in class, I did not give it our as an homework assignment.  My mistake, not yours.  Don't freek out!!!

On Monday as well, students will be annotating information on the Geography of India.  This will be due by the end of our stack day class. Again don’t freek out, all of you will do great job.

To all my wonderful and most excellent 6^th grade students. Wow can you believe after this week it will be the last week before Christmas/Winter Break. How time has been just flying into HISTORY!!!!!!!. I find it amazing.   What does this mean? Well, I’m glad that you asked that most Important question.

REMEMBER I AM ALWAYS AVAIABLE FOR HELP IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE PUTTING TOGETHER YOUR POWERPOINT STORY BOARD. EITHER TEXT ME, OR CALL ME!!!!!!!! THERE ARE NO EXCUSES FOR NOT BEING RESPONSIBLE!!!

For periods 1, 3 and 5 it means, all of your research on your Google Cards/PowerPoint must be completed by this Thursday December 10^th, and we will be in the computer lab again on the 15^th.

Starting at the beginning of the class, roll will be taken, and then we are in the computer lab putting together your PowerPoint/Google card cultural project presentation. ALL OF YOUR RESEARCH MUST BE COMPLETED, because there will be no researching in the computer lab.

The things that all of you must have are the following:

• Story board of your three cards about your Ancient Egyptian Topic.
• You and your partner will put together the first card (introduction Card), and your last card (Bibliography card) which show all of the web sites or book used to learn your topic.
• Each of you will have a different color card that you and your partner will decide.
• There must be at least one picture in each of the cards that you make. If you want more that is your choice.
• All of the pictures you will be using will either be on your CCUSD web account or you may bring a memory card with the pictures on it. There will be no searching while you in the lab.

Period 2 and 6 will be in the computer lab starting on Wednesday December 16^th and 18^th. The info I wrote above also pertains to all of you too.

What is happening this week:

There will be two quick writes this Monday and Next Monday. The first will be a vocabulary quick write Tomorrow December 6, 2015. I informed you this Thursday and Friday on chapter five, on vocabulary. Of the 20 vocabulary words in chapter five, I will choose seven words. Your job is to know these words. Attached to this Website will be all of chapter five words.  This should take no more than five minutes to complete.   The QW will have a Vocabulary word bank on the top of the paper and the definitions will be below the word bank. You will put the correct vocabulary word with its definition.

ALL OF YOU KNOW THESE WORDS AND THEIR DEFINITION I KNOW IT. GO OVER THE VOCABULARY WORD AT HOME AND REVIEW!!!!

Next Monday we will have a similar QW on the Ancient Egyptian Social Pyramid. You will find this on page 156 in your book. Again you will have a word bank at the top of the QW and below it will be a picture of a pyramid with six levels. Your job is to put in the correct order the Ancient Social Egyptian Roles.

YOU HAVE A TOTAL OF 10 DAYS TO MEMORIZE THIS SOCIAL PYRAMID. EVERYBODY WILL DO GREAT I HAVE ALL OF THE CONFIDENCE IN THE WORLD IN ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!

My Plan this week is to get into Mummification, Kush, Pharaohs, pyramids and a lot more. We will be creating pictures of the Canopic Jars that all of you will be making. These are the four sons of Horus, son to the god and goddess Osiris and Isis. The Canopic Jars were the protectors of the four internal organs taken out of the body during the process of mummification. They were the Liver, stomach, intestines and stomach. I will also tell you the story of how according to the Ancient Egyptians life started. This is call the Story of Isis, Osiris and Set.

A lot to get through, and I hope I can get through it before winter/Christmas Break.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!

Was Thanksgiving a most successful family moment for all of you amazing 6^th grade students? I pray that it was, and that all of you over stuffed your tummies to the breaking point. Mine was joyous and very happy. I, of course being the best cook on the planet, was responsible for the turkey (FYI my turkey was PERFECT) and the rest of my 5 girls made all of the rest of the meal. It was amazing!!! I hope, that before everyone started munching down on their fabulous dinner each of you told the people around you how thankful you are for all of the things around you, mom, dad and all of the family that is fortunate to have you in their lives.

Well Guess What It’s back to school, but 20 days Winter Break and Christmas YEAH!!!!!!

What is happening this week:

We will be spending all our time on Ancient Egypt!

On Wednesday and Thursday all of us will be a part of the Actor’s Gang. So we have a lot to get through Egypt before this day. We will be starting the video Time Life Lost Civilizations Ancient Egypt Quest for Immortality.  Everyone please go over chapter 5 Ancient Egypt and review this civilization, and we will go through other topics in class. I encourage those of you who want to get a head start you can go to YouTube and type in Time Life Lost Civilizations ▲ Ancient Egypt Quest for Immortality and watch the movie now. Its 55 minutes without taking notes. After the movie I will be telling you and Ancient Egyptian Myth. It really cool and will take me the whole period to tell.

Cultural Project:

All of you should be working on your PowerPoint Ancient Project. Remember I am always assessable to all of my students for information. Text or call me.

Students who have forgotten their topic can go to their ARIES account and look there!!!! No Excuses!!!!

For my periods 2 and 6, we will be in the computer lab starting on December 16^th and 18^th to put your presentation on the Google slides or PowerPoint.

For my 1, 3 and 5 period classes, we are scheduled to be in the computer lab on December 10^th and 15^th.

Beach trip for period 1:

On December 17, we are scheduled to be at the Beach this day for all of the eligible 1^st period students. The only thing you bring a small backpack that has your lunch if you have not requested one, a towel, sun screen and slippers. Have your bathing suits already on!

By this Monday all of my students should be finished with chapters 5 and 6 Ancient Egypt and the Land of Kush.  We will be diving into the Civilization of Egypt this week.  Unfortunately I will not be in class this Monday.  I will be in school, but not in class.  I will be in a teachers meeting in the Multipurpose room.  This day you will be watching DVD that will not require you to take notes.

For my period 2 and 6 classes I will check your homework on Friday, because there is a career day on Wednesday.

What is happening this quarter:

  CULTURAL PROJECT:

The cultural project (25% of overall grade), is an item(s) that is created by the student based on the ancient or modern civilization of Egypt. Students will have a total of three weeks to complete this project.  This project can either be a drawing, creative model, mobile, or diagram or movie.  In fact, as long as the model created represents the topics learned I encourage my students to surprise me.  The purpose of this assignment is to get all students in the idea of research and what it takes to learn about a historical item.  IMPORTANT …No more than $2.50 can be spent on any project.  I will be more impressed if your child creates a project spending absolutely nothing, but using items around the house to make any and all cultural projects.

Important to understand the purpose of this assignment:

Although the physical project is important it only accounts for a total of 40% of your grade, the other 60% is your presentation.

All students will be making a presentation in class lasting a total of 2 min per person. This is all of the time that you will get to report the project that you have created, based on Modern of Ancient Egypt. (SO PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICEE. You will be put on a timer, and all students must complete their presentation within that time restraint.

The rubric for your presentation will be 1 to 4 points equaling 60% of your overall project grade

Important

Students will be given a total of three weeks to start and research the project they have chosen to do.   On November 19 or 20 Mr. Garcia will ask students what their topic is. This quarters project is due December 10 or 11^th or when you have me based on your period. MR. GARCIA ENCOURAGES ALL STUDENTS TO TURN IN THEIR PROJECT BEFORE THE DUE DATE, TO LESSEN THE CHANCE OF A POSSIBLE ABSENCE. Mr. Garcia will give daily in class reminders to his students, as well as have a written count down on the white-board.

Egyptian Essay Final:

All students will be taking an in class Ancient Essay Final.  This will be an in class 800 word 8 paragraph timed 60 minute essay.  Don’t freak out, I will teach you how to write this easy essay.  In fact I will be giving a Cheat Sheet listing all of the topics that has been learned in class that will help you choose your topics you will be writing about.  This test will be worth 25% of your overall grade, so it is important.

On Tuesday and Friday of next week I will be going into detail on both the Project and Final Essay.

To my wonderful and most delightful 6th grade students. I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed with the results of the Modern Middle Eastern Map quiz. I want to congradulate those students who did exceptionally amazing on the quiz, and for those who did poorly you do have an opportunity to remake the quiz on a day to day basis to bring up your overall grade.

I will engrave this phrase into your minds until you get extremely tired of it, but is dose serve a purpose. "You can lead a horse to waster, but you cannot make it drink!" All of you know I will bend over back wards to make school fun, exciting and educational. I will also give you the tools to always succede, but unless you start drinking from the pool and use what I teach in class and put of this web site, none of you will learn.

I'm so sorry for putting this information on so late, I had a HUGE problem with my computer all day today (Sunday). Some Virus and was not able to put any information on the Homework web site.

What is happening this week:

We will finish up Mesopotamia Return to Eden on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. After the movie we will have a quiz. All students will be able to use all their notes and of course if any one does poorly can make up the quiz as many times as they wish to better their grade.

On Thursday and Friday all of my students will be roll playing an Ancient Samarian Scribe. You will be writing Cuneiform on some Terra Cotta clay just like the ancients did 3000 years ago. It is a fun in class project and a worth while learning experience. Try not to be absent these days.

             I want to let all of you know I enjoyed our roll play this week pertaining to Hunter and Gatherers, and our Cave Paintings we did on Thursday and Friday. I want to let all of you know that it is a great thing to make fun of yourself once in a while and let it all hang out.  Laughing at one self is good!!!!

               I know for some of you it was a little embarrassing to portray a hunter gatherer, and for you girls to roll play a boy, but it was a great lesson to learn. This lesson brought to the front of the line how important communication and language is in our society. A lot of you don’t realize how important it is that you can communicate and understand one another because is it second nature to you, automatic, but a learned behavior .  Let us use that idea and fill your minds with a lot more knowledge and language,

               Remember our exercise lasted only 5 minutes, then afterwards you went back communicating in English, but,  pertaining to our ELD (English Language Development) students, they have to go through not understanding English on a daily basis, until of course their English develops. These students in no way are dumb or stupid, they just have a language barrier, so be kind, understanding, and patient with them, and make them feel welcomed. It was fun for me, and I hope for you too!!!!

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday:

              We are starting a new civilization this week called Mesopotamia or “The land between the Rivers,” the Tigris and Euphrates located in present day Iraq, capital Baghdad. This is an interesting civilization in itself. This is where the modern civilization as we know it started.

             The first thing we will do on Monday is take about 5 minutes and complete the water color cave painting we finished on Thursday and Friday. Then all of my students will be starting and labeling a “Modern Middle Eastern Map. The formula will be exactly how we did our 7 Contents map, nothing in the instructions will change just the location.

             All my students will be responsible and have to memorize all of the Middle Eastern countries, capitals, rivers, seas, oceans, gulfs and straights. There will be a quiz on this map. You will have Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to label your map and once I have finished correcting it will be able take it home and color the map. (You color your map in one direction and do not color over your labels and in a political format not physical) Your completed map is due on Thursday and Friday or depending on what day you have me.

Thursday and Friday:

             These days you will be doing another map on ancient Mesopotamia. This map is a lot smaller than the modern day Middle Eastern map. You will only have this period to start and finish it. For students who do not finish either the Modern Middle Eastern map or Ancient Map you will receive no grade until it is completed by either coming in my classroom during lunch or after school Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday.

            As always if I make absolutely no sense at all, and you are totally lost in translation all you need do is call me and I will do my best to explain what next week will be like.

To my wonderful 6^th graders. I am extremely proud of all of you. Taking your Chapter 1 and 2 test this last Thursday and Friday was a great success. Now, there was a very small number of you that are having a little problem, but for the most part 85% of you pass the test with a “C” or Better, 4% with a “D” and 5%

We will finish up the Otzi the “Iceman,” take our quiz then get to the subject matter of Cave paintings of which we will finish up Ancient Man and dive into the realm of “Mesopotamia,” and the rise of civilization itself. This is really really COOL!!!! 

For those who were absent, and have not taken a lot of notes on the Iceman video, get the finished notes from friends or kids from your class.  Ask them if you could borrow them to copy.

Now we will not get into cave paintings until Tuesday and Wednesday and focus on finishing up Otzi on Monday. And taking our quiz. But remember what I told you for me it’s going to be exciting because all of you are going to have to do something that will be a little embarrassing, but you will learn a lot. To my wonderful 6th grade students,

The quick write we took on Thursday and Friday was a little bit disappointing and I need to change my way of teaching for those of you who are not getting the Ancient material.  A total of 84% of you did extremely great on the quick write, and 16% it seems are not getting the material. 

Because I have to give these assessments based on Common Core, and what the other 6th grade social studies teachers are giving, I am realizing that although every one of you understand the material I am teaching, it is difficult for some of you to take and pass standardizes quizzes or tests.

This week I will work extremely hard to prepare all of you for the test that is coming up on Thursday and Friday of this week.  This test will be a multiple choice, fill in, and a short answer test.   I have been telling all of my classes for the past three weeks that this test is coming up, and that your homework each and every day is to review and go over all of the vocabulary, essential questions and lesson review question in chapter 1 and 2.

This will be a test so unlike quizzes and in class work, you cannot retake the test to better your grade.  ALL OF YOU MUST REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW, AND WHEN YOUR ARE DONE REVIEWING REVIEW AGAIN.  Remember that you are scaffolding your brain in step by step movements.  DO NOT study the night before the test and expect to pass, this is not a smart move.

WHATS HAPPENING THIS WEEK. 

We will finish Otzi the "Iceman" on Monday, take the quiz and focus on the rest of the week getting you reading for the test on Thursday and Friday.  This test should not be at all difficult, because all of you know this information about Ancient Man.  Boys and Girls prepare, do what you are supposed to do and finally trust yourself on your abilities.  All of you are extremely capable and smart.  I have FAITH in all of you, TRUST YOURSELF!!!!!!

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK. 

We will finish taking and correcting the quiz on the “Bible,” and take our quick right on chapter 1 and 2 on vocabulary at the end of class. So, remember everyone needs to review all of the vocabulary in chapter 1 and 2. NOT STUDY, but review. The quick right should take you no more than five minutes to do.

Remember we will have a test on chapter 1 and 2 on October 6^th and 7^th. This will be a multiple choice, vocabulary, true and false and short answer test. There will be a total of 25 questions, so from now until October 6^th and 7^th REVIEW, REVIEW and when your done, REVIEW again Chapter 1 and 2. 

Once we finish “The Bible “ DVD and quiz, we will be watching the DVD “Big AL,” that explains the scientific method. We will again take a quiz on the DVD, of which like the Bible quiz, you will be able to use all of your notes. Then we will dive into Ancient Man to get you ready for the test that all of you will do fantastic on. Remember to always trust yourself.

I certainly hope that all of my students take the time and energy to see what I have written for this week’s class. Remember what I said will happen if you don’t!!!!!!!!!!

About this week’s quote, all of you must understand, no one is perfect 100% of the time.  Homo sapiens make mistakes and fail once in a while but, that's ok. What you have to remember is “what do we do or learn about the failure we have made,” and "how do we use that failure to succeed in the future,"  Remember this, if we never try anything at all we never grow, so, take a leap of faith and try no matter what the obstacles, and if you fail, you try again and again until you succeed. Awesome concept Huh?

 This week in Mr. Garcia’s class?

We will continue the juxtaposition of religion vs science with the Movie “The Bible” until we get to King Nimrod and the Tower of Babel. Remember there will be a quiz after the movie. All of the notes I am giving you can be used while taking your quiz. I am giving you the quiz question and answers, which means, everyone should receive an “A” on their quiz, on top of the extra credit I will be giving during the quiz itself. The only time extra credit will be given is when the class as a whole is taking the quiz. No extra credit will be given when the quiz is retaken or because of an absence.

If any students does poorly on the quiz, don’t worry, you can retake any quiz as many times as you like during lunch or afterschool with the exception of Wednesday, until you get the desired grade you want, of course before the stated deadline. This deadline is one week before the end of each quarter.

Retaking Quizzes/Missed in class work:

Retaking any quiz, or for that matter finishing up any missed in class assignments is your decision to make.  I will not force anyone who does poorly on a quiz or has incomplete work to retake or finish. You and you alone are the responsible person to take the time and energy to finish any work! 

After “The Bible,” we will look at the scientific method and watch “Big Al.” This DVD will explain the scientific method comparing and contrasting religion. Again, a quiz will be given after this DVD about the movie.

Formula for Videos and DVD:

When, unless I tell you otherwise there is a video or DVD that is viewed in class there will be a quiz at its conclusion.  Mr. Garcia will be stopping and starting all video presentations to explain and tell you what to write in your notes. Students may use their notes while taking the quiz.  If students pay attention and write down what is lectured, all students should get an "A" on the quiz.

The steps are as follows:

• Watching video
• teacher will stop and start video for explanation
• Students take notes teacher is presenting
• After presentation quiz given
• Quiz is in chronological order
• Class, as a hole will take the quiz together
• The teacher will offer extra credit questions during the in class quiz only
• Students who do poorly on their quiz can either retake the quiz during lunch or afterschool. Extra credit questions will not be offered for retakes or being absent.

Finally:

We will finally go over what a five sentence paragraph is, and retry the Geography assessment. I will give all of you another attempt to write this assessment. I was unclear to most of my students, my fault, but not to worry.

My wonderful and brilliant sixth graders you, in the past three weeks have increased your knowledge tenfold. We have been on geography these past few weeks, and we have covered a tremendous amount of information in such a short span of time. From the continents, oceans, rivers, to longitude, latitude, the tropics, Equator, Prime Meridian and the IDL or International Date Line.

This week is back to school night on Wednesday from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m., I hope all parents make it to the event. Unfortunately classes will only be 10 minutes long, so I’m going to have to go through a lot of information in an extremely short time. Luckily, parents will have my phone number, so they will be able to get in contact with me at their convenience.

This week in school:

We will be finishing the in class continent map, that must be completed 10 minutes before the end of class to get credit. You had more than enough time to outline your map Thursday and Friday during class. If I corrected your map then you were allowed to take it home, outline your findings in blue or black pen (Only), then, color your map in a political format in one direction ONLY. Do not color over your labels, but around them.  Don't be forced to redo your map by making this mistake.

Remember if directions are not followed you will have to start your map over on your own time.   Those students who complete the map on time will receive 100%, while those who do not receive a “0.”

Students who do not finish on time will have the opportuning to change their “0” grade to a 100%, by doing three of the following. If you do not complete the assignment on time you may come to the classroom, on your own time either at lunch, Monday through Friday, afterschool on Monday Tuesday, Thursday or Friday or during PAWS if you are not assigned another class. I will not allow any students to take in class projects home, all must be completed in class. NO EXCEPTIONS

You will have until the week before the end of each quarter to turn in all incomplete class assignments with full credit. After the deadline I will not accept any missed assignments

On Tuesday and Wednesday we will be diving into the Scientific and Religion method, and on Thursday and Friday watching two movie  “The Bible and Allosaurus “ Each will go through the religious and scientific idea. After each DVD there will be a quiz, of which, you will be able to use all notes and questions written down in class.   Students should receive an “A” on all quizzes because I will be giving you the questions and answers while watching the movies. Those students who do poorly on their quiz will be allowed to retake the quiz as many time as they like to better their grade, but it will only be possible during PAWS, Lunch or afterschool on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.

Don’t freak out this will not be hard I promise you. You need to trust yourself, but most importantly ME!!!

Look at what Winston Churchill said a long time before you were born. Very important for all of you to understand. How you look at how your day or school is going makes a big difference. You, and only you is the person who can make or break your day. That being said, tell yourself every day it going to be great, wonderful and fun. I promise you it will, because you will make it that way, but if you do the other, by saying this day is going to “Suck,” guess what IT WILL!!!!!!

What’s happening this week:

Chapter 1 lesson 3 and 4 Cornell notes is dues on Tuesday and Wednesday at the beginning of class. If it is not done, just remember I have no other choice but to give all students a “0,” who do not complete their assignment, and I cannot let you make it up.

Lucky for you it’s only a four day week. Yeah!!!!!! We are focusing on geography. On Tuesday and Wednesday, let me warn you your hands are going to get very cramped, but it is worthwhile trust me. We will doing a lot of writing, and you will not fall asleep, I guarantee you. It will be on Geography.

On Thursday and Friday all of you will be doing a political map of the world. The exact same map that is on my white board in class. You will have the entire period on Thursday and Friday and all of Monday’s period to finish this map. No more time will be given, so all of you will need to focus and do your best to finish the map with the time given. Students who do not finish their map will receive a “0” until it is completed.

You will not be able to take your map home with you. It must be completed in class, and class only. If students who do not complete their map, must come afterschool to finish it to get their 100%.

This is so true, I want each and every one of you, every morning when you wake up say to yourself, that you are smart, strong and can do whatever your heart desires, and be confident in who you are.  You matter, and people around you love and care for you!!!

What's happening this week Aug 3st to September 4th?’

On Monday and Friday will be a stack day periods 2, 4 and 6

Tuesday and Thursday will be 1, 3, and 5

Wednesday will be an early release day but we will have the Magazine drive kick off Assembly

During the block periods our class will be starting geography. I (Mr. Garcia), will introduce you to Cornell Note taking that you will be doing for your homework book assignments.  We will be doing chapter one in class together.

Once Cornell notes taking has been taught, then we will start Geography.  There will be a geographical vocabulary sheet we will do in class, then an in class map all students will participate in. 

Mr. Garcia will give you more than enough time to finish your assignment in class.  Those students who finish will be given an ": A" on their map, while do not finish will receive a "0." To change the grade from a “0” to and “A” students will have to come afterschool either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday. I’m always there until 3 p.m. or longer. You will not be able to take your homework home until I have corrected the map.

As far as the syllabus, I am still waiting for Dr. Gotanda your middle school principal to approve it. Once it is, you will receive the syllabus

Let me introduce myself my name is Richard Garcia, I am one of three 6^th grade social studies teacher at Culver City Middle school teaching 6^th grade social studies. I started my student teaching at the middle school during the 1991-1992 school year and officially started as a teacher during the 1992-1993 school year. To date unofficially this is my 24^th year and officially 23^rd year at Culver City Middle School.

Students, let me inform you that this class will either be your favorite, or at least one of the top two favorite class you will have this year. Not to say I’m vain, but, I love my job, and don't tell anyone but I get paid for this job. I want all of you to know that I will always try to inspire you to expand your knowledge whether in school or not. I will try to burn this phrase into your minds, and pray that it takes hold in inspiring your future goals.

Confucius say’s ”Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I haven't worked in 24 years, amazing huh?

My job this year is to introduce you to the aspect of Ancient Civilization but, remember I can only touch the tip of the ice berg doing this. There is so much information about each and every civilization we will be learning this year that it is impossible to deeply get into the substance. What I will be doing is getting you ready, by introducing you to research, historical essay writing, map making and the reasons why things happened, that of course leads up to today, and how all of us live our lives.

Because of Common Core, my course syallabus is not ready to handout, this will happen the second week of school. I will let you know that I will be following the California State Standards that was passed by the state legislature.

What is needed for all of my students .

Student’s every single one of you must understand that you have to be in school. The moment you understand and agree that school is your future, school will be fun and rewarding. Without an education all of your dreams and desires in your life will be limited. An education will open up anything and everything you may desire to do in your life, and only you, will stop this from happening, not mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, siblings, aunts, uncles or friends! You are the creator of your wants, desires and dreams, and only you can fulfill them. Remember that always!!!

Every school year is a total of 180 days put into August to June, nine months and two weeks. We are in school from 8:20 until 2:20 a total of 6 hours. Our school has block scheduling meaning each class Tuesday to Friday is 90 minutes long so, social studies, math, science, language arts, P.E., and your elective will be broken into periods.

Wednesday day and Friday will be period 2, 4 and 6, 90 minute block periods

Tuesday and Thursdays will be period 1, 3 and 5, 90 minute block periods

Monday will be called “Stack Day,” in which you will be going to all of your classes that will be 50 minutes long

What this breaks down to, is you will only have three days of any class. My students will only see me three days a week. For example. If you have me on Wednesday and Friday, I will not see you on Tuesday and Thursday, and of course if you have me Tuesday and Thursday, I will not see you Wednesday or Friday. This schedule will make it feel like the year will go by extremely fast, and of course it will.

On Monday the bell rings at 8:15, and you have 5 minutes to get to class. When period 1 ends you will again have 5 minutes to get to period 2, and the same goes with the rest of your classes. Just getting to class accounts a total of 30 minutes a day, then there is lunch which is 35 minutes. So, a total of 1 hour and 5 minutes is eating and getting to class. So on Monday you are not in class 6 hours, but 4 hours and 55 minutes.

On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday there are five 5 minute transition or 25 minutes, on top of 35 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes for PAWS, in total that is 90 minutes going to class, eating and PAWS. Subtract that from the 6 hour day and students are in class a total of 4 hours and 30 minutes. Wednesday is an early day ending at 1:35 p.m., of a 5 hour and 15 minutes of the school day, lunch is 35 minutes and three transition is 15 minutes or a total of 50 minutes, bringing your school day to only 4 hours and 25 minutes.

There is a lot of information that needs to be taught to all of you this school year and in the beginning it going to seem impossible, but do not worry, as hard as it seems all of you will adjust, and be successful as a 6^th grade student. All of you are scared, excited and most of you are ready for a new school year. I have extreme confidence in all of you that you will succeed and thrive at Culver City Middle School.
