Summer Reading Assignment

Note: I suggest you get the required summer reading assignment done before the summer that way you can relax and not think about school over the summer.

Please get the ELA placement letter signed that you got this week. Return it to me by 5/15.

 

You may request a waiver from your counselor to not be in the suggested course of study in ELA for next year. You will automatically be placed in the course I placed you in unless you sign a waiver from the counselor. The placement letter is a suggestion based on your current level of performance in ELA.

If your parent/guardian does not want you to read that book, then you need to read a book your parent/guardian approves of. You are free to not be in a group. -Read as much as you can of The Outsiders and based on what you read, do 1 of the following:

1. Create a cartoon with 4 boxes. In each  box, draw the most important event and explain what is happening. 

OR

2. Write a 7 sentence summary of the most important events you read about. 

 

-The goal is to be done with the book by January 13, 2017, so you should read 30 pages each week. 

-Read as much as you can of The Outsiders and based on what you read, do 1 of the following:

I will be giving you all of Monday, September 19th to finish writing your Theme Story. If you feel like you cannot complete the assignment by then, please work on it this weekend.

 

 

-You will be reading 1 book a month starting in October. Choose your October book by this date and start reading it. You may choose any school appropriate book that is at least 100 pages long. 

Lexile scores were posted on Aeries. They determine students reading level. We want to move them up a grade level by the end of the year which is why it is so important that they read for at least 30 minutes at home each day a book of their choosing that is school appropriate.

There will be no homework the week of 9/5 due to the fact that students are being assessed on descriptive language on 9/6 and 9/7 for a grade and students will be given an Argumentative Essay on 9/8 and 9/9 they will have to write that all Language Arts teachers are giving  so that we know their skill level at the beginning of the school year. The argumentative essay will not be counted as a grade. It will be counted towards their classwork grade based on completion of the assignment and not on the quality of the work produced because we have not taught this concept yet.
