For this project, students were shown a news broadcast video illustrating an odd outbreak affecting an urban area that hints at a zombie outbreak!  Students were then asked to:

  • create their own broadcast
  • delegate roles throughout
  •  prepare a scripted presentation that will be performed in front of the class.  

This will be the final project of our Surviving Science Unit.

Remember, a CLAIM is an inference that answers a question.  It does not include data or observations. It is subjective which means others can come to similar conclusions, but as long as it answers the question, it doesn't have to look like everyone else's claim. EVIDENCE is not subjective, it is objective.  This means, that the evidence must be an observation that supports the claim.  REASONING should link the evidence and the claim together, it is what connects the ideas to the data.

  • We filled out "Analyzing Attendance Data" which helped us organize our thoughts and got us to look closely at particularly interesting data.  I will attach this form below.  The completed form belongs on 19 R.
  • Then we completed an "Investigative Report Form Day 1" where students practiced their CER skills.  
    • This form will be stamped and graded with feedback for up to 5 points.  It will be put on your "Labs and Reports" grade.  
    • If you are unhappy with your score, you may come in after school by OCT 10th to get it restamped.
  • Also attached is the Attendance Data Graphs students were asked to analyze and decipher. 

Today we continued our investigation into the health concerns at Truman and Jackson Middle School.  Students were asked what would the next steps in their investigation if they were actual health investigators.  Classes came to the conclusion that they would test the water, talk to the parents, see if the students came into contact with any other sick people or animals, see if there were patterns where they hung out, etc.  I was impressed with their creativity!

  • Students were provided with interviews from parents and school calendars for Truman and Jackson which will be attached below.  This is the data they were analyzing, so it does not belong in the notebooks.
  • Students were asked to organize their thoughts using "Analyzing Calendars and Interviews" form. This form belongs on page 20 R. 
  • Then we completed an "Investigative Report Form Day 2" where they further practiced their CER skills. It belongs on pg. 20 L
    • This form will be stamped and graded with feedback for up to 5 points.  It will be put on your "Labs and Reports" grade.  
    • If you are unhappy with your score, you may come in after school by OCT 10th to get it restamped.

Dear Director:

I want to alert you to a possible health problem affecting students at the Truman Middle School. On Wednesday, May 20th, 15 students were sent to the nurse with flu like symptoms.  The symptoms included but were not limited to slow movement, slurred speech and violent tendencies.  They were sent home and have not returned to school.  I just had a discussion with the director of our student band, Officer Willis. He told me that in his class on Wednesday, May 20, one-third of his students were absent.  There have also been multiple sightings of these missing students in and around campus acting abnormally.  Today, in Mrs. Arviso’s classroom, there was a call to the nurse about a sick child.  The child was unstoppably coughing and projectile vomiting.  By the time the nurse got to the classroom, we had evacuated all students from the room.  The nurse entered the room and was attacked by said student.  Now the nurse is showing signs of similar symptoms.  

This situation reminds me of last year when we had a widespread outbreak of the flu. Can you help us determine if we should be concerned? If there is a problem, can you suggest measures we might take to prevent or contain the disease?
