Estilo MLA

El MLA Style (Manual de la Modern Language Association of America) se ha convertido en la guía estándar para la publicación de trabajos académicos en el área de las humanidades, especialmente en lengua y literatura. Además de normas para la redacción de citas, incluye indicaciones para dar formato al texto.

La cita textual en el estilo MLA

La cita textual es la copia palabra por palabra de otra fuente y deberá hacerse entre comillas e incluir el nombre del autor y el número de la página de la obra citada cuya referencia completa se hará en las referencias bibliográficas finales. El autor citado puede ser incorporado a la introducción de la cita o incluirse entre paréntesis después de la cita. Si la cita tiene más de 4 líneas debe hacerse en un párrafo aparte, sangrado y sin comillas.

Joseph Conrad writes of the company manager in Heart of Darkness, "He was obeyed, yet he inspired neither love nor fear, nor even respect" (87).

Cita larga

At the conclusion of Lord of the Flies, Ralph and the other boys realize the horror of their actions:

La paráfrasis en el estilo MLA

La parafrasis es una forma de presentar la idea de otro con las propias palabras. Debe incluirse el nombre del autor y el número de la página.

Autor incorporado al texto

Robert Lenz states that Oregon salmon populations have dramatically declined in the past decade (27).

Autor después de la paráfrasis

Oregon salmon populations have dramatically declined in the past decade (Lenz 27).

Si la fuente es de más de dos autores y hasta tres se listarán todos:

Studies have shown that more and more teachers are changing careers after their first year of teaching. (Posamentier, Jaye, and Krulik 55).

Si la fuente tiene más de tres autores se pueden listar todos o sólo el primero añadiendo "et al."

Stutts, Smith, Cass, and Round argue that language development may also impact development in related parts of the brain (339).

Si la fuente es anónima se citará el título entrecomillado.

Una página web

MLA ya no incluye direcciones URL en sus citas porque considera que éstas son inestables y muchas veces los documentos pueden aparecer en múltiples lugares en la red.

La cita deberá incluir tantos datos de los siguientes como sea posible:

Autor o editor (si aparece). Título de la página web. Nombre de la institución u organización responsable de la publicación. Fecha de creación. Medio de publicación. Fecha de acceso.

En caso de no aparecer el nombre del responsable de la publicación, incluir la abreviatura n.p. Si no aparece fecha de publicación, se debe incluir la abreviatura n.d.
