Dear Parents and Students,

As you know, we have moved to online instruction for the remainder of the school year. Lessons are now posted on the Google Classroom for students to access. The Google Classroom will be your go-to resource! By clicking on the "Classwork" tab in Google Classroom, students and parents will find the Weekly Lesson instructions (by date), Weekly Student Check-In form, Active Practice, Instructional Videos, and many other useful resources. The information is updated weekly.

I will be conducting weekly Zoom sessions (easy-to-access video conferencing with students), so keep an eye out for Google Classroom postings about the topics, times, and dates of the next Zoom session!

If students are unsure about how to submit online work, please have them check out the "Ways to Submit Homework Online" instructions posted in the Google Classroom.

The Distance Learning Bell Schedule is posted below and it is the schedule that students will use for the remainder of the school year.

HW01: Percents #1 Handout

Note: Students will be receiving their Unit 1 Test results on Tues/Wed of this week. We will be going over the Unit 1 Test in detail. If students are not happy with their score, they will have the opportunity to take the Unit 1 Defense (test retake) after school on Thursday, Oct 3.

To prepare for the Defense, students should carefully examine the mistakes made on the original test and practice the types of problems that caused them difficulty. Practice can happen at home or during PAWs and is essential before taking the Defense, as the Defense score will replace the original test score.

Also, in a couple of weeks, students will have a Unit 2 Test on Percents. The Unit 2 Test score will then average with the Unit 1 Test score to determine a student's overall math class grade for the first quarter.

Percents Are All Around Us!

Percentages are a very important part of our world. They are used in sports, science, cooking, health & fitness, medicine, and many other areas.

Here are some interesting percentages:

It is estimated that only 2% of the world’s population has green colored eyes.
A wild giant panda’s diet is almost exclusively (99%) bamboo.
There are some ice creams that are 75% air.
Last year, the Dodgers won 64% of their games.

Do a little research and come up with 2 more examples that we can add to the list above. Be creative! Find interesting statistics that involve the use of percentages.

4: Student work shows a solid understanding of ratio concepts (90% - 100%)

3: Student work shows a good understanding of ratio concepts. The student may have made minor errors, or needs practice in working on problems that have fractional parts, or practice in justifying one’s thinking. (80% - 89%)

2: Student work shows some understanding of ratio concepts. The student needs more practice (See online options below and/or come to PAWs!) (70% - 79%)

Note to Parents:

Students completed their first Goal Problems this week. Goal Problems will be used frequently in math class to help monitor how well a student is understanding the current concept. Goal Problem scores will be visible on Aeries, although the score does not effect a student’s overall math grade.

The Goal Problems are like practice test problems. Students will examine the mistakes that they made (in class on Thurs/Fri) to further learn the topic and target their practice for the Unit Test.

Generally, students may have low Goal Problem scores in the beginning of a unit (since students still have a lot to learn about the concept). As we get closer to a Unit Test, Goal Problem scores should increase to show a deeper understanding of the concept.
