Welcome to an exciting year of 8th grade social science!

 

This year your child will learn about U.S. History up to Reconstruction while at the same time developing the following skills:

 


1)      Reading & Annotation of Primary and Secondary Sources, Document-Based Questioning - Students will be able to work with complex texts and show understanding and critical analysis of the tests through annotation and document-based questioning   

 

2)      Research Methods & Evaluation - Students will evaluate sources and reach original conclusions as young historians using research methods

 

3)      Comparative Histories/Multiple Perspectives - Students will show evidence of their ability to examine historical events from multiple perspectives and then compare and contrast those perspectives

 

4)      Thematic Connections Between Past and Present  -  Students will connect themes from United States History with contemporary issues facing our nation

5)      Written & Oral Argument - Students will present written and oral arguments surrounding historical and contemporary issues within the discipline of Social Studies

8TH GRADE PICTURE DAY:  8th Grade Promotion Pictures will be taken on Monday, May 1th during PE class. Please dress nice (dressy dress) boys a collared shirt no T-shirts, please. We will arrive early for the zero period. The students will be holding a diploma. Flyers will be sent home on Monday during 1st period, extra forms are available in the front office  .Promotion picture retake day is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2nd at their studio located at 20406 Earl St, Torrance 90503.  It's by appointment only.  The appts are available from 4 pm to 6 pm in 15 minute increments.  We currently have 4:00, 4:30, 5:00, 5:15, 5:30 and 5:45.  First come, first served.  If these fill up and they have additional requests, they will extend the times available.  Please call directly to schedule an appt. 310-750-0259.

8TH GRADE GRAD NIGHT:  Magic Mountain tickets sales begin on Monday, May 1 during lunch in front of 2nd hall for $75 for 8th graders only.  Get them while supplies last!

Reminder all 8th graders will be attending the College field trip on Monday March 6. 
 
This is a great opportunity!  
 
Here are a few reminders about what to expect so that you have a great time on Monday:
1.  You will report as usual to 1st period.
2.  You will be given a shirt to wear.  You MUST wear the shirt.
3.  You should bring lunch and water.  You will not be able to purchase lunch at the college you visit.  If you turned in a lunch request form, your chaperone will have your lunch.  
4.  Please do not bring school supplies, you will not need them.
5.  You may bring up to $20 in case there is time and chaperone/supervisors allow students to go into the student store.
6.  Students may bring phones to take pictures of the campus, but chaperone will determine appropriate times.
 
Please remember that there will be consequences, and those may include loss of 8th grade privileges, if you are not meeting high standards of respect and behavior.  
 
Please let me know if you have any questions.  As you know, I am not a chaperone, I am staying at CCMS with my 7th graders, but I wish you all a great experience.

Also don't forget to complete the fist step of your unit project and know there may be a "pop" quiz on the declaration of independence on Monday / Tuesday.
