With state testing starting on the 18th, I would like to encourage students to bring their own headphones/earphones to use during testing. We will be covering the listening portion of the practice test on Monday, so students can start bringing their headphones/earphones to class.

Here is an outline template for you essay

Students will be completing a research essay on a social issue. Students will be choosing a topic from the list provided and researching causes and solutions for their topic this week. Attached is a list of topics for students to choose from and an outline for students to complete by Monday 3/20.

 

Chapter 12 Questions:

 

•       Why doesn’t Ponyboy feel scared when the Socs approach him and he threatens them with a broken bottle? How has Ponyboy changed?
•       What does Darry mean when he says, “you just don’t stop living because you lose someone”?
•       How do we know Sandy didn’t love Soda as much as he loved her?
•       Explain how Darry and Ponyboy play tug of war with Soda.
•       What was so special about Johhny?

Chapter 10 & 11:

•      How does Pony’s dreaming, or lying to himself, finally work in this chapter?   
•      Why was Johnny’s dying so difficult for Dally to handle?
•      Why do you think Dally would have wanted to die?
•      Explain why Pony might rather would have anyone’s hate than their pity.

Chapter 9 Questions:

 

1) When Pony asks what kind of world it is, what is he saying about how society judges people?

2) Why do the boys fight? Why is Pony different?

3) What is the difference between Tim Sheppard's gang and Pony's? Explain how Pony feels this difference might give Pony's group the upper hand.

4) What do you think Johnny's last word -- "Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold" -- mean?

  Read Chapter 8 and answer the following questions.

•      “We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang? And for the same reason.” What do you think Pony means, and what is the reason?
•       What does Pony mean when he says, “We can get along without anyone but Johnny”?
•       If Darry did not have Soda and Pony, why would he be a Soc?
•      What does Cherry mean when she says Bob “just wasn’t anyone”?

Chapter 6 & 7 Discussion Questions:

•       What does Ponyboy realize about his relationship with Darry? What was Darry afraid of, according to Ponyboy? (pg. 78)
•      “I had taken the long way around, but I was finally home. To stay.” (Hinton 88) What does this quote mean?
•       Why would being crippled be worse for Johnny than someone else?
•       Why would Two-bit think Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy were heroes all along; before they saved the kids?
•       What was Bob’s real problem according to Randy? (pgs. 102-103)          
•       Why did Ponyboy think it was better to see the Socs as “just guys” on page 118? What do you think he means by this?

Students are to read Chapter 5 on their own and answer the following questions:

 

•       Why does Ponyboy have a problem with Johnny’s idea of disguising themselves?
•       Why does Johnny think Dally is a hero? Do you think Dally is a hero based on what he did?
•       Why are the Socs and the Greasers going to fight in the vacant lot?
•       Who’s the spy for the Greasers? Does this surprise you? Why or why not?

 

After reading Chapter 2 of The Outsiders, answer the following questions in your notebook. Be sure to provide textual evidence (quote with citation) and explain and elaborate how your evidence support your answer.

 

1) Why do the Socs girls Cherry and Marcia sit by the Greasers?

2) Can you name some other differences between the Socs and the Greasers?

3) Summarize the events that happened to Johnny "four months ago." (pg. 30) How did they affect him?

4) Find one important sentence from the chapter.Copy it down in quotation marks and tell why you think it's important.

Answer the following questions in your notebook. Be sure to provide evidence from the novel (quote and citation) and explain or elaborate how the evidence supports your answer.

 

1) How are the Greasers like a family?

2) How do Darry, SodaPop and Ponyboy operate as a family?

3) What is the problem between Darry and Ponyboy? Why do you think Darry's expectations are different for Ponyboy than for SodaPop?

4) What is Johnny's "position" in the gang? What is happening in his family life and what has happened to him with the Socs that has contributed to his position in the gang?

1) Re-read Chapter 1. Yes! Re-read chapter 1. We are studying, not just reading, this piece of literature.

 

2) Character: Copy down a sentence in quotation marks (note the author's last name and page number) for each member of the Greasers that either describes their personality or appearance.

 

3) Conflict: Find one sentence that describes a difference between the Greasers and the Socs; copy down the sentence in quotation marks (and cite) and explain in your own words what it means. 

Read "A school decision to use iPads in class and at home cause controversy."

 

In your notebook:

 

Write a response summarizing the disagreement between any two people or organizations in the article. If you were to support the claims made by only one of these parties, who would it be? Why? Explain and elaborate.

Wrinkle In Time Essay: Pre-writing Activity

 

Think about the conflict between Meg and IT and answer the questions below:

 

1) What are the details of this conflict?

2) At what point in the book was this conflict resolved?

3) What events led to the resolution?

4) Describe how the conflict between Meg and It was resolved?

5) Based on the resolution of the above conflict, what is the theme or author's message to the reader?

6) "He isn't an enemy at all. He's our friend." (L'Engle 148) Why is Charles Wallace wrong when he refers to It as their friend? What are the flaws of this statement?

A Wrinkle in Time Theme Essay (5 paragraph):

 

 

This is to be done on google doc and shared to the teacher using google drive on your school google account. We will be formatting the paper in class. There should be no need to adjust the font from it's default setting (Arial 11 or Times New Roman 12). Be sure to double space. This is a formal essay and should not be written in the first person. Use the Pre-writing activity as an outline for your essay. 

Choose one the characters from Wrinkle in Time: Charles Wallace, Meg, or Calvin.

Imagine that the character is under the control of IT.

Create a scenario where an internal or external problem would magically disappear.

The last line of the panel will state: “He is content” or “She is content”
