The attached files are the instructions and sources used in class to make a graphic organizer called a storyboard. The topic is Arabia and the people called Bedouins that would become the first Muslims. 

 

Each attached file called a frame has reading. The reading is used by the student to create a colored visual representation of the reading in each section of the storyboard. Some words can be written in each storyboard frame to help anyone reading the storyboard.

The attached files are the notes and outlines given in class to help prepare for the first test about the topic of Islam.

Students were given instructions to create an Arabian Peninsula map. This map work was given as an on-line assignment. It is to be submitted to the teacher on-line using Canvas for grading. The student should be familiar enough to show parents where the map is and where to submit it for grading.

 

The attached Arabian map is a "base map" to use to add the details as shown in the rubric.

A map assignment about Arabia was posted on the Canvas webpage. This exercise is to be done on-line using a Google Slide. Students are to use the links given in the Canvas classwork/homework section to make the map. A copy of those instructions and the base map are included here.

The attached file is a copy of the class notes for the current topic of Arabia and Islam. Expect to use the notes to complete both a practice test and a test for points. 

The student were given significant time during two periods to work on the Japan Pop-Up project. It is to be turned in on Monday, 1/30. The student should do a self check of the work using the points rubric.

The attached file is a copy of the notes to prepare for a test about the "Seventeen Article Constitution of Japan. This attachment includes textbook pages for use during the test. The notes can also be used during the test.

 

The test in accessed through the CANVAS webpage. The students know how to get to this page to do the test. The test should be completed by Monday. 

Students are working on their first class debate. The topic for the debate is a question: Do the benefits of getting a job as a police officer outweigh the drawbacks?

 

The question was based on a textbook debate assignment about European knights during feudalism. The word "knights" was replaced with "police officer" to make the class relevant to the students' lives in today's world. Students are assigned to a debate team and they know which side they are debating from (called "the affirmative or pro" or "the negative or con").

 

Some basic guidelines on how to do a debate were given in the form of two videos and the teacher's notes. Those videos and notes can be found by going to a  school webpage called CANVAS, and clicking the class period icon for Google Classroom.

Students should have used the CANVAS homepage "culver.instructure.com" to access the instructions to do a Japan map. The map had to be hand-drawn on an 8 1/2 by 11 blank sheet of paper. This assignment relates to the topic of feudalism in Japan. The example map and instructions are posted on the CANVAS homepage assigned to the teacher.

The instructions for the bellwork (warm-ups) for the week of Nov. 14-18 are posted on the CANVAS homepage ("culver.instructure.com").

Teachers of the social studies department want to do a mock election for President of the United States in October. My recommendation for students is to research and discovery the following:

1. the various political parties that will be on the California November ballot and their core beliefs and ideas,

2. the various candidates for President from those parties and their core beliefs and ideas,

3. the U.S. Constitutional idea of "checks and balances", that is the limits on the powers of the presidency.

Students are working on a mock press conference. In groups, students will present their findings about an archaeological discovery in South America of a site of encounter called Tiahuanaco.

 

The resources include: 1) student notes about a series of photographs of the Tiahuanaco ruins in South America, 2) the attached file that is an information sheet about how to do a press conference, 3) an attached file that was the reading about the site of encounter called Tiahuanaco.

The attached file is a copy of the rubric that students and teacher will use to evaluate the first test for the Roman Empire unit.

 

The test involves reading a one-sheet document, annotating it by using the annotation strategy guide given to students, and writing a one paragraph summary about the reading. Students were given opportunity to practice when they were given a take-home practice test this week.

The attached file has the instructions to complete a graded map assignment. This work was started in class, with at least three periods devoted to it. Students worked in groups as part of the exercise to make decisions about how the map was to be marked and how to write paragraphs that explain the map.
