Assignment

Hi folks,
Here are the transcribed class summaries for your Buddhism graphic organizer:

1. How did Buddhism begin?

Buddhism began 2,500 years ago, when a prince named Siddhartha Gautama left the safety and luxury of his palace. When outside he saw a sick man, an old man, a dead man, and a monk. The monk told Siddhartha to become a holy man. Years after during many religious practices, Nirvana came to Siddhartha under a fig tree. He was given the title Buddha, or the Enlightened One.

2. What does Buddhism teach?

Buddhism teaches the 3 Universal Truths and 4 Noble Truths. The Three Noble Truths state life always changes, “a life based on possessing things don’t make people happy,” and there is no such thing as an unchanging soul- it is a collection of characteristics. The Four Noble Truths state that life has a lot of suffering, the root of suffering is greed, there is an end to suffering, and to end suffering you have to follow the Middle Path.

3. Rules for Living

The Middle Way, not living in luxury or indulgence, was the way to Nirvana (“enlightenment”) and to follow this path there are 8 guides. One of the guides states, you must be aware of your thoughts, and actions. Another one is to do work that is beneficial, not harmful.

4. Zen Buddhism and Meditation

Meditation is an essential practice to most Buddhist because it’s a way to achieve enlightenment, or Nirvana. Nirvana symbolizes the freedom from needless pain and suffering and being alive and present in one’s life. There are multiple ways of meditation, like sitting quietly near rocks.
