We have been practicing Transformations for 2 weeks and kids will take a formative assessment on Monday which will go into Aeries as 0% of their grade. Again, this is an 8th grade standard that they are expected to know for next year's state test and will build on in Geometry. We have been dedicating all of our class time to Transformations and reviewing our Essential Standards.

 

Attached is the classwork from today, which many students finished unless they defended CC10), and the homework on Transformations. These worksheets, combined with the work we did over the past two weeks, should be enough preparation for the Transformations test on Monday as long as students have thoroughly and thoughtfully completed the work they have been provided.

Students need a protract to complete the homework. Make sure to pick one up!

Students need to catch up on anything we did last week. We learned a lot of material so students should be through the leveled practice and all 4 links on IXL by Wednesday.

 

We are going to start constructing triangles on Wednesday so students will need a protractor to complete homework (see post from last week).

3. Finish scale drawing if you didn't turn it in already. After Monday you will be deducted 5 points. Take a look at the previous post with the sample scale drawing and index card. Also take a look at the rubric.

This is a very vocabulary heavy concept category so I suggest kids start making flashcards. We covered half of the vocab today and will finish on Friday.

 

Reminder: Students defending Systems of Equations need to come to my room at lunch and they will finish their test during PAWs.

Students need to decide on a scale for the  scale drawing of their bedroom. An example would be 10 inches = 1cm. 

 

Using their actual measurements, there should be 8 total, they will use the scale to calculate the measurements of their scale drawing. 

 

On Wednesday they will be given graph paper to draw their scale drawing, give it a title and color it to be turn in on Friday. 

 

 

5 points - Precision (measurements are accurate based on real-life measurements and scale, lines are drawn using a straight edge, scale drawing is centered, scale drawing takes up most of the graph paper with room for a title)

Homework sheet attached. Students need to sketch a picture of their room with the dimensions in feet/inches. Directions are on the homework paper and there's a sample attached. This is for a project that will be due Friday March 9th.

We finished the Taco Cart problem on Dan Meyer's website 101qs. Link below. The kids started this in class and should reference their work from their notebook. They can use a calculator to complete this problem.

 

 

Homework is attached. They will need to sketch a coordinate plane to complete #5. We started this problem in class.

TEST IS ON WEDNESDAY!

The homework is page 427, #1-6 in the purple Course 3/volume 2 book. Students received this book in class today and the answers are attached.

 

The classwork in case students didn't finish or were defending is the following:

1. Given to students to take home if they didn't finish it in class - Half sheet (finding distance in a coordinate plane using Pythagorean Theorem)

2. Map of England (distance on a map) - Attached

3. "Time to Get Away" - Page 440 in their volume 2/course 3 book

 

I recommend that ALL students finish this practice by Monday. Our test for Pythagorean Theorem is on Wednesday 2/28. 

Students need to complete the attached homework and check answers thoroughly. 

 

At this point, students should have also finished both DOK 2 pages (green) in class. If they did not finish them in class they need to complete them for homework.

I recommend that kids finish the homework and at least 1 page of word problems, which many of them started in class. Students who won't be here on Wednesday (mostly 2nd period) should finish both pages of word problems by next Friday.

Students need to study for their test based on their goal problem. They were allowed to take papers from class and attached are some practice worksheets with answers. The second pdf (systems of equations word problems) has a couple of problems (#5, 6 and 11) that are a bit too advanced for this class so the kids can skip them. Students should have already worked on this worksheet in class but it's attached in case they didn't finish it.

Students will struggle with this worksheet if they are not fluent in operations with fractions which was a pre-requisite for this class.

Students are writing equations for HW. Students should look at work and answers if they are stuck and use the information to try to understand the process. With that information they should try the next one. If they get stuck again, repeat. The work and answers are there to learn from. Students cannot just avoid the HW altogether.

Also attached is the classwork practice (PDFs) on two-step and multi-step equations with answers. The last few problems on the multi-step worksheet we have not learned (variables on both sides). Kids should not do those problems. 

Two Step equations worksheet (basic) - For many kids this is a review. The focus is to learn the basics of solving two step equations not to just find the answer. Students need to show all steps and check their work (see notes).

Attached is the classwork (Percent of Change) and the homework (Percents Review). Test is on Wednesday.

We started percent of change in class today. It's probably the most complex learning target in the percents concept category so we will be doing it for two days. Monday we will review with a round robin and Wednesday is the test.

Homework - Tax, tip and sales practice (basic)

 

Students who are planning on defending CC1 must bring the printed packet to class on Wednesday. It will need to be completed by Monday October 16th.

Due Monday - Front half of the Tax, Tip and Discount sheet. (Answers attached) as well as the defense form (if you plan on defending). The classwork on simple interest is also attached. 

 

Also included on this post are the FIVE documents which make up the CC1 defense packet which students must complete to take the defense on Friday October 20th. Answers will need to be checked in class during PAWS next week.

I have attached the classwork and HW with answers. Students may limit themselves to 20 minutes of work per night which should be enough to complete the HW. Whatever they didn't finish in class they can do either in PAWS, at home or before school on Tuesday. 

Students are practicing mental math and simple conversions. Students should also find out a) how much their parents usually tip (%) and b) how they calculate tip at a restaurant.

Today we are taking time to play catch up as I am noticing the kids are struggling with the percent proportion and percent equation. We are going to slow down and give more kids time to get to the DOK 2 problems in class. I have also found some great videos and practice on exponents and scientific notation via Khan Academy so the kids will spend part of class on the computers working on that. Sal explains negative exponents in a different way than I did so some kids may greatly benefit from his tutorial and everyone could use the extra practice. I have posted the links that the kids will be visiting on my page so that they can access them at home as well. 

 

Their homework will be to continue wherever they left off in class whether it be with percent problems at DOK 2 or 3 or exponents practice. They should choose the HW that suits their individual need and spend 15-20 minutes working on it this weekend.

For homework and in preparation for their 1st test I ask that students choose a worksheet to complete for homework. I have offered more than enough resources in class and for homework. Please complete DOK 2 level problems you have not yet done as practice for your test. I also recommend that students review their notes. All resources for this topic are posted here or in previous posts. 

Students have been assigned the scientific notation review page. I recommend completing the word problems #2 page for practice with DOK 2 type questions. I have also attached the totem pole that we did in class today in case kids want to do the other player sometime before Friday for extra practice.

 

Wednesday we will continue with DOK 2/3 questions in class and do our last set of goal problems before their test on Friday. 

 

Just a reminder that students can come get extra practice/help tomorrow morning (Tuesday) at 7:15. They will need to enter my room from the outside as the hall doors are locked.

 

Students may also come to PAWs on Thursday as my session will be open. 

 

Please refer to your purple book for further practice. Exponent rules are found on page 26-49 and scientific notation can be found on page 51-57 and 60-65 (multiplying and dividing only).

Students are converting to and from scientific notation and practicing operations with scientific notation. If they would like to be one step ahead they can work on the level 2 word problems attached as well. Their test is Friday Sept. 22nd. 

Students will practice all exponent rules with the attached worksheet and answers. Further practice can be found in their purple book starting on page 43.

 

Students may want to do the attached worksheet now and again next week before their test as we are moving on to scientific notation today and they should make sure the exponents stay fresh in their mind. Their test is next Friday Sept. 22nd.

Students are practicing power of a power/product. Answers for the worksheet give in class are attached. 

 

We just started this today and will continue it tomorrow. This is a difficult topic so don't get discouraged if you are struggling.
