Hey my little chickadees,
The Midterm is just around the corner. My job is to remind you that all of you should be researching your four topics on Egypt and four topics on India. As of tomorrow, there are 10/11 days left. So, my little padwhans, if you have not started researching DO IT NOW. Do not do it the night before or the day of.
I will again attach the cheat sheets for India and Egypt to this site, so no one needs to search for them. Also attached to this site will be the PowerPoint Indian program we were doing on Thursday and Friday. This worksheet is due on Monday, or tomorrow. Everyone should have the PowerPoint in their Slides on their G-mail account.
Remember to all students who are missing their Hieroglyphics, Canopic Jar drawing, Indian and Egyptian map, Egypt quiz, and the Egyptian fill in the blank warm ups, your dead line to finish these assignments is the day of the Midterm. If any of these items are not finished by the deadline I will not accept them afterwards. All these assignments as a lot to your overall grade, 25%.
I am in my class every day at lunch, Paws (For students who get stamped). I just finished my last league JV Girl's basketball game on Friday, and am now in playoffs, so I will probably not be in my class afterschool for the next two weeks.
What's happening this week March 5th to 9th
We will be going over the PowerPoint and getting into India On Monday Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Thursday, I and Mr. Gutherie will be on the Beach fieldtrip, and on Friday we will continue going over India.
As always, if you need any more info just text or call.

Well my little chickadees,
Wasn't a three-day weekend just the bomb? Now we come to the last four-day week, so enjoy it, the rest of the quarter will not have any free days, except for all of the students who are attending the Beach Fieldtrip.
Back to School!!!! YEAH!!!!!
What is happening this week the 20th to the 23rd.
What is due on Tuesday and Wednesday:
Remember that your Canopic Jar drawings are due on Tuesday and Wednesday at the beginning of class. Those students who are not finished will receive a "0" on their ARIES account, until it is completely done. This must be accomplished on your own time. The time that you have is either during PAWS, Lunch, or Friday afterschool. Remember the computer will not change your grade automatically, I must do it. It is your responsibility to finish this assignments on your own time and no one else.
We will be starting Hieroglyphics role playing this week. Just like the Cuneiform role playing we did for Mesopotamia, student's will now become Ancient Egyptian Scribes. Student's will be creating Hieroglyphic cartouches with stencils and Tempera paint. We will have only this week to complete this assignment segueing into Ancient India.
Like always any question call or text me.

Just to give you an idea of how well the class did. Overall all of my students as a class scored a total of 88%. All of you are amazing.
Period 1 was 86%
Period 2 was 93%
Period 3 was 90%
Period 4 was 83%
Period 6 was 86%
All students got their midterm on Monday. Those of you that did not get it signed by parent or guardian cannot turn it in for credit, because this was a homework assignment due at its deadline.
To all parents my hands are tied when it comes to the topic of homework. The Culver City Unified School District has mandated that I cannot accept any late homework. That is why any homework assignments are only a total of 10% of your child's overall grade.
All other assignments are considered in-class work. What this means is, I will let your child turn, retake quizzes with full credit until a week before the end of the quarter or semester. In this case your child has uintil December 13th or 14th, depending when they have me, to turn in all missed warmup annotation, retaking of quizzed to get a desired grade (I will never lower a grade, just increase it.)
I am available during lunch 5 days a week, at P.A.W.S. Tuesday or Thursdays, and afterschool on Monday Tuesday, Thursday or Friday
If students are not coming in class afterschool and I am done I will leave by 3:00 p.m.
Usually on Tuesday or Thursdays I will occasionally make doctors appoitments and will not be in class afterschool. I will usually let all my students know.
We will be watching the Scientific method viewing a video on "Otzi or the Iceman" We will then dive into Ancient Man.
Homework for this week will be chapters 4 on Mesopotamia. While you are doing this homework we will dive into Ancient Man and his evolution.
Attached to this homework site will be chapters 3 and 4. I will give you one hard copy. If you lose the packet you will have to down load it at home
As Always if I am unclear call or text me.
Mr. Garcia
To my wonderful students,
Look at the phrase above. You all need to learn that everyone needs to work at being successful. It will just not happen. You need to work very hard, every day and never give up but move forward.
Side note
I know there is a lot to read, but it is very important so take a deep breath and READ!
What is happening the week of October 9th. to the 13th.
So far the quick write we did on Thursday and Friday on reading a Timeline was ok, but it could have been better. Those students who are having difficulty in understanding Geography, I will cover in P.A.W.S.
This Monday all of my classes will be taking the common core Geography and History test. This will be a standard test that will have multiple choice and short answer. Just as a reminder common core test do not affect any students grade, but you must do your best on these tests.
On Tuesday and Wednesday all classes will be taking the 7 Continents and Geography test. All students must know the location of all of the 7 Continents, 5 oceans, Mountain ranges, Seas, Rivers, gulfs, rivers, Equator, Prime Meridian, International Dateline, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle.
Students need to download the completed 7 continent map and geographical location on the Homework site, and review not study. Be confident all of you know this. Trust yourself.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday there will be no in class warm ups. We are taking tests these days, but all of you need to remember that unless I tell you that at
the beginning of class there will always be an ‘Annotation Warm up.” All students should finish this warm up before we start class, you will always have 15 minutes to work on this paper. If you do not finish all in class warm ups are due at our next class meeting. A copy of all warm up will be on line for all students to down load.
Before we dive into the topic of Ancient Man, our discussion of Religion versus Science will continue. We will continue watching the “Bible” until we get to “Nimrod,” One of the kings of Mesopotamia. Notes are being taken while we are watching this DVD and a quiz will be given when the DVD is done. All notes taken during the viewing can be used when taking the quiz.
Once the “Bible” has concluded, we will be viewing “Allosaurus or the Scientific Method in history. Again notes will be taken and will be used when taking the quiz.
As always if what I have written makes absolultly no sense call or text me.

My wonderful 6th grade students:
I hope that every one of you are getting used to CCMS. I know that for some of you it’s a long road to walk, but trust me, everyone of you will get used to your new school.
Just as a reminder to all of CCMS 6th, 7th and 8 grade students and parents who are interested in the 2017-18 Spring Break trip to Boston and New York City. The dead line to register is September 30th.
To date, there are a total of 31 students and parents who are attending this event. Not to worry there are still 9 spots left for this years trip.
What is happening this week October 2nd to the 6th
On Thursday and Friday of last week students should have finished the 7 continet and geographical map. Those who finished were given 100% and those who did not received a "0." as their grade, until they finish the map.
Maps cannot be taken home until I have corrected it. No other time in class will be given to any student who does not finish. In order to get full credit, each student who is not finished must come to my classroom either doing lunch Monday through Friday, or afterschool on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. I am usually in my room until 3:00 to 3:30 these days.
Monday
We will start going over the geographical and historical common core test later on in the week.
We will be starting start the topics of Science versus Religion, segueing into Ancient Man and we will be watching some videos that represent the scientific method and religious ideology.
On this website I put the completed 7 continent and geographical lesson we did last week for all students to study and review this map. All 6th graders will be responsible to learn where all continents, oceans, river, seas and geographical areas are located. Students will be given an blank map to fill out using memory only. Student need to review every night to prepare for this test.
As always, if I make absolutely no sense at all call or text me

We are now starting our third week of school, out of a total of 40 weeks in the school year. Are all of you having fun yet? Well I am if you were wondering.
Homework that is due on Thursday and Friday
All of you in my class were given Chapter 1 lessons 1, 2 3, and 4. Now I am giving you credit for Chapter 1 lessons 1 and 2, and we will finish it on Monday and Tuesday. Lesson 3 and 4 will be done at home and is due for periods 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 on Thursday and Friday, or when ever you have me. A complete copy of the packet is on this homework web site if you loose your original one.
IMPORTANT: I will only give you one hard copy, and if for some reason you lose your original copy, you then need to go this site download the assignment then copy it yourself. You can print double sided on most printers, ask you parents to help you. If you don't then it will be 12 pages.
REMEMBER I CANNOT ACCEPT LATE HOMEWORK, AND IF IT IS NOT COMPLETED YOU WILL RECEIVE A "0."
It is very important that you understand, I'm expecting you to do your best and taking a leap of faith annotating the packet as we have learned in class. No more no Less!!! You are to give me your best guess explaining each of the paragraphs you read using your 6th grade mind. Do not compare yourself with anyone else but YOU!
There are no wrong answers, what annotation is forcing you to do is read then explain in your own words what you read. I promise you it will get a lot easier as time moves on. Our class is going to be doing a lot of annotations!!!!
Things you need to do to complete your homework assignment.
(You do not have to go to your social studies dictionary for the definitions of these words. On the paper handed out they are "Bolded and underlined" and the answer is either to the left or right of the vocabulary word.)
Is done when you have a vocabulary word you are not familiar with
Is used to paraphrase your sentence or paragraph
At the left of your packet your annotation is paraphrasing in your own words the sentence or paragraph you read.
What's happening this week in class:
Before class starts all students will be doing a 15 minute warm up at every meeting. The warm up will be exactly how you do your homework assignment, but short. Each and every one of you will be annotating information that the class is going over at the moment.
We will be starting Geography and be writing Geographical statements. When this done each and every class will be creating a Seven Continent Map.
Instructions on how to create it will be given in class. When the assignment is started each class will have a total of 1 class period to finish this in class project, that is 90 minutes. This is more than enough time to complete this project. It is YOU and only you that will be responsible to complete this task.
Those who finish this assignment in the allotted time, will receive 100%, and those who do not receive a "0." The only way to change that "0" to 100% is by finishing the assignment on your own time either during lunch 5 days a week, or after school in my classroom, on Monday Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. The only time I will let you take your map home, is when I have corrected it. You cannot take it home otherwise.
Any question or concerns all each and every one of you need do is CALL or TEXT me!!!!

To all parents and students joining our family at Culver City Middle School.
Let me introduce myself my name is Richard Garcia, I am one of five 6th grade social studies teacher at Culver City Middle school teaching 6th grade social studies. I started my student teaching at the middle school during the 1991-1992 school year and officially started as a teacher during the 1992-1993 school year. To date unofficially this is my 26th year and officially 25rd year at Culver City Middle School.
I am so excited for this New Year at CCMS for all new students and parents. I know how stressful this can be entering a new environment, no longer in the safety of your previous elementary school that is comfortable and safe. Now all of you head into the abyss of the unknown not knowing what to expect. This in itself can be a monumental challenge.
I assure you that all of the new students entering this wonderful school have nothing to fear. Your are entering a family environment that will painstakingly do all their best to make you feel safe and welcomed in your new environment. This I promise you 100%.
Now I may be a bit biased because this is my official 26th of 25 years at CCMS, but all of you are entering the best District and middle school in the state, if not the country. Each and every one of you will get the best possible education this world has to offer, I guarantee it.
Every single teacher will do their job implanting the best education possible, but it is very important that students, as students give your best in absorbing this education, this success can be accomplished through dedication, hard work, and a drive to learn. It is you, and only you that will succeed and thrive as a CCUSD student. All of you need to know, the success is yours to have, by your hard work.
I know this is a lot to read, but it is important information!!!!
Students, let me inform you that this class will either be your favorite, or at least one of the top two favorite class you will have this year. Not to say I’m vain, but, I love my job, and don't tell anyone but I get paid for this job. I want all of you to know that I will always try to inspire you to expand your knowledge whether in school or not. I will try to burn this phrase into your minds, and pray that it takes hold in inspiring your future goals.
Confucius say’s ”Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I haven't worked in 26 years, amazing huh?
My job this year is to introduce you to the aspect of Ancient Civilization but, remember I can only touch the tip of the ice berg doing this. There is so much information about each and every civilization we will be learning this year that it is impossible to deeply get into the substance. What I will be doing is getting you ready, by introducing you to research, historical essay writing, map making and the reasons why things happened, that of course leads up to today, and how all of us live our lives.
What is needed for all of my students .
Student’s, every single one of you must understand that you have to be in school. The moment you understand and agree that school is your future, school will be fun and rewarding. Without an education all of your dreams and desires in your life will be limited. An education will open up anything and everything you may desire to do in your life, and only you, will stop this from happening, not mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, siblings, aunts, uncles or friends! You are the creator of your wants, desires and dreams, and only you can fulfill them. Remember that always!!!
Every school year is a total of 180 days put into August to June, nine months and two weeks. We are in school from 8:20 until 2:20 a total of 6 hours. Our school has block scheduling meaning each class Tuesday to Friday is 90 minutes long so, social studies, math, science, language arts, P.E., and your elective will be broken into periods.
Wednesday day and Friday will be period 2, 4 and 6, 90 minute block periods
Tuesday and Thursdays will be period 1, 3 and 5, 90 minute block periods
Monday will be called “Stack Day,” in which you will be going to all of your classes that will be 50 minutes long
What this breaks down to, is you will only have three days of any class. My students will only see me three days a week. For example. If you have me on Wednesday and Friday, I will not see you on Tuesday and Thursday, and of course if you have me Tuesday and Thursday, I will not see you Wednesday or Friday. This schedule will make it feel like the year will go by extremely fast, and of course it will.
On Monday the bell rings at 8:15, and you have 5 minutes to get to class. When period 1 ends you will again have 5 minutes to get to period 2, and the same goes with the rest of your classes. Just getting to class accounts a total of 30 minutes a day, then there is lunch which is 35 minutes. So, a total of 1 hour and 5 minutes is eating and getting to class. So on Monday you are not in class 6 hours, but 4 hours and 55 minutes.
On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday there are five 5 minute transition or 25 minutes, on top of 35 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes for PAWS, in total that is 90 minutes going to class, eating and PAWS. Subtract that from the 6 hour day and students are in class a total of 4 hours and 30 minutes. Wednesday is an early day ending at 1:35 p.m., of a 5 hour and 15 minutes of the school day, lunch is 35 minutes and three transition is 15 minutes or a total of 50 minutes, bringing your school day to only 4 hours and 25 minutes.
There is a lot of information that needs to be taught to all of you this school year and in the beginning it going to seem impossible, but do not worry, as hard as it seems all of you will adjust, and be successful as a 6th grade student. All of you are scared, excited and most of you are ready for a new school year. I have extreme confidence in all of you that you will succeed and thrive at Culver City Middle School.
Welcome, and I cannot wait to start teaching all of you Ancient History
Your wonderful and amazing Teacher
Mr. Garcia :)
