It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone. We have broken the laws. "The Lottery" Reading Questions
 
1) Were you surprised by the ending of the story? If not, at what point did you know what was going to happen? How does the author start to foreshadow the ending in paragraphs 2 and 3? Conversely, how does the author lull us into thinking that this is just an ordinary story with an ordinary town?
 
2) What are some examples of irony in this story? Why might the title "The Lottery" or the opening description in the first paragraph be considered ironic?
