Editing a la Edgar Wright in Google Classroom

Editing a la Edgar Wright

You have two choices and you may work with ONE partner:

1)
Jump Cuts:  edit either the footage I brought or your own to condense a
scene to just a fraction of what the action would normally take.

or
2)
Edit a montage of Elroy (the dog) and create two totally different
vibes by using different audio tracks and sound effects.  Therefore, you
will have two different cuts (example, one happy, one sad).  You are also free to edit your own footage for this but I will provide enough if you want to use my footage.

We
will have Monday and Wednesday in the computer lab to do this.
Thursday we will present our cuts (only if you want to but I hope you
will).

Export your file(s) to the computer lab desktop
and mark the assignment as done.  If you had a partner, you should tell
me in the comments who you worked with.

Shot Types Assignment in Google Classroom

Shot Types Assignment

In this week's assignment, you will either TAKE seven types of
shots listed in the doc or, if taking and uploading photos is too hard,
you can show me images from the web that illustrate the five types of
shots that you choose. The doc shows 11 types of shots. You will
choose 7 of those to recreate or find on the web. I would prefer it if
you can take the shots yourself. Remember - shoot HORIZONTALLY!!!
You can put the images on a doc or in a slideshow - whatever is easier.  Below is a sample project.

Monday's Class Work in Google Classroom

Monday's Class Work

You have a few options:
1) Write a scene between at least two people based on a dream or deja vu experience you've had.  if you have not had either that you can recall, write about a strange coincidence or situation you've experienced.  The scene must have the following: sluglines (remember, those are in ALL caps: INT. HOUSE - DAY), action blocks (the sentence or two below the slugline telling us briefly what is going on and it must be in present tense), character names, and their dialogue.
or
2) Write a one-paragraph (at least 5 sentences but preferably 6 or more) synopsis of a dream but told as a short film.  You can embellish it to make it more "cinematic" (film-like).
3) Think about a scary or dramatic scene that has happened in your lifetime.  Something that really startled or shook you.  Turn this scene into a movie either in script form or in a synopsis paragraph.

Those writing in script form will get the full 40 points.  Those doing the paragraph will get 37 max points because it's a lot easier.  That's still an A but just not the full points.

Wednesday Classwork - Developing Your Character in Google Classroom

Wednesday Classwork - Developing Your Character

QUICK WRITE.  Right now, each of you will create a character in class.  You have TEN MINUTES.  On a Google doc, write the following info:
Give your character a FULL name (first and last) and age.

- tell us where they are from,

- who is in their family,

- what is their personality like,

- what are their hobbies,

- what are their habits / QUIRKS / flaws

- what do they want in life (goals)

- what kind of student are they,

-
and what is their backstory (example, moved a lot as a child, parents
are divorced, best friend just moved away, was bitten by a dog when
younger and now is terrified of dogs, etc... those types of stories)
Remember - it’s the LITTLE details that really bring these people to life!
If
you have a character of the opposite gender from you, think of your
friends or family members to help you write about them. Consult the “14
Things” handout to help you.  As a writer, you must be able to write
characters for all genders.

Flip the Script - class work in Google Classroom

Flip the Script - class work

Choose one of your favorite films, TV Shows, Animes or even a video game.   Write 3-4 sentence summary of that.  If you’re doing a film, it might be helpful for you to go to the website imdb.com (Internet Movie Database) and read their summary of the film.  Then put it in your OWN words. https://www.imdb.com/  Make a new version of the film/show/game that is the complete opposite mood/tone or entirely different genre from what it originally was.  For example, turn a Comedy into a Horror ( or Horror into Comedy), or turn a regular Drama into a Sci-fi (or Sci-fi into regular Drama).  Write out your new film idea in 3-5 sentences.  This is just a short summary of what you film will be.  This is your pitch. You'll get extra class participation points if you're willing to share your pitch to the class :)
