Answer each item in a complete sentence.
1. Look for the section labeled “Comparisons Across Cultures” on p. 62. You
will see bullet information labeled Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox.
On your paper, draw a large “T”. Label the left side of the “T” ROMAN
CATHOLIC. Label the right side of the “T” EASTERN ORTHODOX. Now,
write the bullet information for Roman Catholic under the ROMAN CATHOLIC
label. Write the bullet information for EASTERN ORTHODOX under the
Eastern Orthodox label.
2. The textbook reads that the Greek philosophy of Stoicism helped Romans
to be good citizens of Rome. What were the three values of Stoicism that
helped Romans develop their citizenship? Write them. p. 68
3. On page 68, look for “Roman Language.” The textbook reads that the Roman
language of Latin became a legacy because the Romans conquered most of
Europe. In your own words, write two ways that Latin influenced the world.

4. On page 70, look for the red heading “Preserving Christianity.” Read the two
paragraphs under this heading. In your own words, write the two reasons that
explain how this new religion survived and grew.
5. On page 70, under “Roman Law and Rights”, the textbook reads that law
promoted two principles. Write the two principles.
6. The textbook reads that Romans created a representative government during
the Republic. The Republic had assemblies and a senate that made laws and
represented the Roman people. Use the paragraph on p. 71 to explain
representative government in the United States.
7. On pages 72 and 73, the textbook compares Roman architecture, citizenship,
and law with similar things in America’s present. On your paper, write the three
examples of the Roman past. For each Roman example, also write the
corresponding modern example in the United States.
