Description
7th Grade Science Syllabus Culver City Middle School Mr. T. Kim Email: [email protected] SCIENCE COURSE DESCRIPTION In accordance with the California Science Standards, 7th grade science students will explore the world of life science. Students will journey into the workings of the smallest unit of life today and throughout Earth’s history. The function and interdependency of the human body systems will also be examined. In the course of the year, students will practice many scientific skills which will enable them to ask a question, experiment and draw conclusions from the results. Procedures Students need to bring the following things to class every day: 1. At the beginning of class, students copy the daily agenda in their Time Tracker. 2. All corrected work will be entered and kept within a Portfolio which is stored in the classroom. Portfolios may be checked-out upon request. 3. Late work will be accepted however it will be penalized by a deduction of points. An increase in days late will increase the points deducted. Grading Grades will be assigned on a standard point scale: B+ = 88 – 89% C+ = 78 – 79% D+ = 68 – 69% F = 0 = 59% A = 92 – 100% B = 82 – 87% C = 72 – 77% D = 62 – 67% A- = 90 – 91% B- = 80 – 81% C- = 70 – 71% D- = 60 – 61% Course grades will be based on homework, quizzes, tests, class work, and projects. Citizenship grades are based on classroom behavior, cooperation and performance in lab groups, respect of classmates and teacher, and teacher discretion. Student’s grade will based on the following assignments • HW: about 30% • Projects: about 30% • Labs: about 10 % • Tests: about 30% Extra Credits You can earn extra credit points by participating in class. If you participate, a ticket will be given to you. Before the end of every class, tickets will be collected and a few of these tickets will be picked for extra credit points Tests Tests make up about 30% of your grade. You will take a test about every 3 weeks. To help you study, a study will be given which contains some of the questions on the test. Absences & Tardies Students who miss a class for any reason are required to make up all missed class projects and homework. It is the absent student’s responsibility to find out what he/she missed by checking http://ccms.ccusd.org, asking another student, or asking the teacher before or after school. Students are expected to be seated at their assigned seat before the tardy bell. Excessive tardiness will result in a “U” for the student’s citizenship grade. SCIENCE COURSE DESCRIPTION
In accordance with the California Science Standards, 7th grade science students will explore the world of life science. Students will journey into the workings of the smallest unit of life today and throughout Earth’s history. The function and interdependency of the human body systems will also be examined. In the course of the year, students will practice many scientific skills which will enable them to ask a question, experiment and draw conclusions from the results.

Procedures
Students need to bring the following things to class every day:

Grading
Grades will be assigned on a standard point scale:
B+ = 88 – 89% C+ = 78 – 79% D+ = 68 – 69% F = 0 = 59%
A = 92 – 100% B = 82 – 87% C = 72 – 77% D = 62 – 67%
A- = 90 – 91% B- = 80 – 81% C- = 70 – 71% D- = 60 – 61%

Course grades will be based on homework, quizzes, tests, class work, and projects. Citizenship grades are based on classroom behavior, cooperation and performance in lab groups, respect of classmates and teacher, and teacher discretion.

Student’s grade will based on the following assignments
• HW: about 30% • Projects: about 30%
• Labs: about 10 % • Tests: about 30%

Extra Credits
You can earn extra credit points by participating in class. If you participate, a ticket will be given to you. Before the end of every class, tickets will be collected and a few of these tickets will be picked for extra credit points

Tests
Tests make up about 30% of your grade. You will take a test about every 3 weeks. To help you study, a study will be given which contains some of the questions on the test.

Absences & Tardies
Students who miss a class for any reason are required to make up all missed class projects and homework.

Getting Extra Help
Successful students will ask for help. Students are encouraged to contact the teacher as soon as any difficulties with the course content or course requirements arise. We are available to meet with students or parents by appointment to address any questions or concerns.

Dear parents/guardians,

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year at CCMS! I will be your child’s 7th grade science teacher. This year we will be studying a variety of exciting topics related to Science. In order to help your child be successful in science class, I ask that parents/guardians stay involved too. The best way to do that is to do the following:

• Review the course syllabus with your student.
• Check your student’s time tracker DAILY and verify that all assignments have been completed.
• Homework is assigned almost everyday. Please make sure that your child shows his or her completed homework assignment before their next class.
• There will be a test about every 3 weeks. Before the test, your child will be given a study guide to help them study.
• Check the http://ccms.ccusd.org website daily for updated agenda, study guides and PowerPoint slides
• Check on your student grades by logging on to Aeries regularly ("https://ccmsabi.ccusd.org/parent/")
• Online version of the textbook with supplemental materials are available via www.pearsonsuccessnet.com website.
• Students are awarded extra credit points for participation. Please encourage them to participate.
• Help your student find a quiet place to study.
• Help your student stick to a schedule when tackling big projects such as lab reports, research papers, and the science fair.

I look forward to meeting all of you soon.
Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Tom Kim
