Read pages 430-445 of Holt Literature and Language Arts.  You will be tested on these pages and are responsible for knowing everything you read from them.  If you have any questions about anything from these pages, it is your responsibility to ask me in class.  This test will be worth 140 points and will be your last opportunity to improve your grade in this class.  If you do not put effort into reading and understanding these pages, your performance on the test will likely lower your grade in the class.  If you put forth the effort, this test will likely improve your grade in the class.  We are almost done, so put as much effort as you can into these last couple weeks. 

 

The test will be administered Tuesday, June 11, and Wednesday, June 12.

The spelling test has been postponed.  You have one more opportunity to study for this test. 

Do Review C on page 328 of your handbook.

Persuasive Essays are due Tuesday and Wednesday.  They must be typed and double spaced.  Use 12 point font.

 

We will be doing peer editing the day the essays are due, so you must bring your finished essay to class if you want to participate and get credit for peer editing.

There will be no homework over the spring break.  Any missing work must be turned in by Monday, April 8th.  After that date no late work will be accepted.

Do Review E on page 335 and 336 of the Holt Handbook.  Write the sentences.

 

Test on all the Words Often Confused on Monday.

Do Review F on page 339 and #21-30 on page 342 of the Holt Handbook.  Write the sentences.

Study the propaganda test and answers that were given to you in class and be prepared for the retest.   Be aware that you will be assigned other homework on Monday, so don't wait until the last minute to study.

From the Holt Handbook, do Review D on page 332.  Write the sentences.

Test on Propaganda Techniques and Fallacious Reasoning.

Re-write your emblem design essay.  Be sure to remember what we discussed in class regarding your name, the title, your thesis statement, and the manner in which you begin body paragraphs.

 

This must be turned in on time for full credit.

Propaganda Techniques Project is due. 

Rewrite short story.  Use proper formating for dialogue.  (It is okay if your story goes over three pages.)  Use page 19 of your literature book as a model.

 

Bring in the cover for your story.  (See the directions on your Plot Map.)

 

Bring in the packet that contains your first and second draft but do not staple them to your final draft.

Do Practice 1 and Practice 2 on page 418 of your literature book.  Review pages 415-417 for help.

 

Finish your emblem design and essay if you didn't turn it in Tues. or Wed.

Emblem design essay and emblem design due.  The emblem design essay must be typed.  The emblem design must be colored.

The first draft of your emblem design Essay is due Thursday for periods 1, 3, and 5 and Wednesday for periods 4 and 6.  You do not have to be finished with your emblem but you must know what symbols will be on your emblem in order to have completed your essay.  You must have three symbols on your emblem.  If you wish, you can have one symbol to represent the past, one to represent the present, and one representing the future.  This is a suggestion, but it is not a requirement.

 

Your rough draft should be typed in the size and type font of your choice, but it should be no larger than 14 point font.  If you want to participate in the peer editing, you must have your first draft completed on the day it is due.

 

An example and outline for this assignment was handed out in class.  Use it to help you write your essay.

Create a list of foreign words used in English from the language you were assigned in class.

 

The Choice are Italian, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Hindi, and Native American.

 

Your list should have a minimum of ten words.

The second draft of your short story will be due Tues./Wed. 

 

This draft must be typed.

 

Like the first draft, it should not include your cover.

 

Bring your worksheet with this draft and the first draft along with anything attached to it.

 

I will be reading and grading this draft.  Treat it as your final draft.  It will be worth 100 points and should represent your best work.

Short stories are due Thursday and Friday.  They must be typed and double spaced.   Write your name in pencil at the top of the page.  Your story should be two to three pages long.  Do not put a title on your work and do not bring the cover page.  That will come later.   

Complete both sides of the Short Story Writing Assignment handout; the back side is only an outline.  Write the first paragraph of your story on another sheet of paper.

Read "Colons" on page 281 of your handbook.  Do Exercise 10 on page 282.  Write the sentences.

Write the first paragraphs on page 119 and page 71 of your literature book in third person or write the first paragraph on page 55 of your literature book in third person.

Read "Semicolons" on page 279 of your handbook.  Do Exercise 9 on pages 279-280. 

Answer questions 1-9 on page 155 of your literature book using complete sentences.  There will be a test on "Baucis and Philemon" on Thursday and Friday.

Summer Reading Book Poster

 

Your book poster for your summer reading should be done on a separate sheet of paper, 8 1/2 x 11 inches.  Use the two pages I gave you in class to help you.  You can download copies of them below. 

 

Be sure to turn in the rubric with a parent signature along with your poster.

Study for the test on clauses, sentence structure, and conjunctions.

 

Know the difference between an independent clause and a subordinate clause and be able to identify these clauses in a sentence.  Understand that you can turn an independent clause into a subordinate clause by adding a subordinating conjuction to the front of it.  Know that a simple sentence has one independent clause and a compound sentence has two or more independent clauses.  Know that any sentence that has a subordinate clause is a complex sentence or a compound-complex sentence depending on the number of independent clauses.

 

For more help, study your class notes or refer to pages 89-90 and 96-99 of your Holt Handbook.
