1. Where are the children going at the beginning of the chapter?

2. Create a short time-line of the events listed in the paragraphs describing how the Logans got their land.  Begin with 1887.

3. What was the burning that T.J was talking about?

4. Why do the children run off of the road?  Why don't they take the school bus?

5. What is the condition of the books that the children receive?

6. Why did Little Man react the way he did to the book he got from the teacher?  What about Cassie's reaction?

7. What was Mama's plan to do with the books?  Did you think this was a good solution?  Explain why or why not.

The requirement for my Language Arts class is that students read independently for 30 minutes a night.  Students need practice to become fluent readers.

Bookmarks:  Find 12 words to add to your bookmark.  Be sure that they are 25 cent words (words that you would need to look up) and one 50 cent word (trivia expert word).

Choose 4 vocabulary words (3, 25 cent words and 1, 50 cent word) to create four Meaningful Writing Activities with your collection.  This week you must do 2 Personification Activities and 2 Mr. Stick Activities.  If you were absent see your packet in your Reference Section of your binder.  You will find directions to each activity and a rubric.

1. Choose a favorite book

2. Make a book cover (no smaller than an index card, no larger than 1/2 sheet of white paper).

This will be graded and added to our class bulletin board.

These are online versions of the Meaningful Writing Activities worksheets.  Students choose 4 words from their bookmarks (they must be words they need to look up), and complete 4 meaningful writing activities each week.  They will learn their first activity on Monday, September 8th.

Homework for all Language Arts Classes:  

Write a minimum of twelve 25 cent words (words you would need to use context clues or a dictionary to define), and write them on your Vocab Collector bookmarks.  (see attached)

Follow guidelines on bookmark:  For each word you need to write the source and page #, and a guess as to the word's meaning to receive full credit.

Students will be vocabulary collectors this year with their class reading and independent reading.

Students need to bring their book today.  

 

Students need to bring 5 dividers or five sheets of colored or construction paper for the Language Arts portion of their binder.
