No upcoming assignments.
What a way to semi start Spring Break
Ok, here is the low down, because of the impromptu early spring break, the CCUSD Culver City Unified School District does not want learning to stop, so that being said, all classes at CCMS will give homework assignments.
Luckily for us (Mr. Garcia’s classes) all of you still need to research their topics on Ancient/Modern India just because the midterm is still on and no other work will be assigned. Students who finish missed assignment take picture of it and either text or put on Google Classroom, so I can give you credit.
The Midterm will be given on Thursday and Friday for all periods. The test will be posted on your Google account Thursday and Friday. What I will do is open up a time that all students will be taking the quiz. Don’t worry I will give you enough information to take this test.
All students will take their test on word processor I will be attaching to this and the Google classroom site. All students will turn in their completed essay to their Google classroom account.
Midterm Essay instructions
Example of introduction, paragraph and Conclusion
This is an example and Im using the Civilization of Egypt not India
In Mr. Garcia’s social studies class for the past 5 weeks, we have been learning, and studying the ancient civilization of Egypt and it importance to how modern man has been influenced by all of the things we do today in our modern world.
I never knew this, but Ancient Egypt was a polytheistic civilization. This means that the Ancient Egyptians believed in many gods such as Ra, Isis and Osirus. I learned that the head god of the Egyptians was named Ra the sun god, he had a head of a falcon wearing a sun disk hat, and the body of a human, and was believed to be the creator of the human race using the Nile River as its source.
Conclusion:
In Mr. Garcia’s social studies class for the past 5 weeks, we have been learning, and studying the ancient civilization of Egypt and its importance to how modern man has been influenced by all of the things we do today in our modern world, I learned about Ra the sun god and hope to learn a lot more in the coming weeks.

Just to give you an idea of how well the class did. Overall all of my students as a class scored a total of 88%. All of you are amazing.
Period 1 was 86%
Period 2 was 93%
Period 3 was 90%
Period 4 was 83%
Period 6 was 86%
All students got their midterm on Monday. Those of you that did not get it signed by parent or guardian cannot turn it in for credit, because this was a homework assignment due at its deadline.
To all parents my hands are tied when it comes to the topic of homework. The Culver City Unified School District has mandated that I cannot accept any late homework. That is why any homework assignments are only a total of 10% of your child's overall grade.
All other assignments are considered in-class work. What this means is, I will let your child turn, retake quizzes with full credit until a week before the end of the quarter or semester. In this case your child has uintil December 13th or 14th, depending when they have me, to turn in all missed warmup annotation, retaking of quizzed to get a desired grade (I will never lower a grade, just increase it.)
I am available during lunch 5 days a week, at P.A.W.S. Tuesday or Thursdays, and afterschool on Monday Tuesday, Thursday or Friday
If students are not coming in class afterschool and I am done I will leave by 3:00 p.m.
Usually on Tuesday or Thursdays I will occasionally make doctors appoitments and will not be in class afterschool. I will usually let all my students know.
We will be watching the Scientific method viewing a video on "Otzi or the Iceman" We will then dive into Ancient Man.
Homework for this week will be chapters 4 on Mesopotamia. While you are doing this homework we will dive into Ancient Man and his evolution.
Attached to this homework site will be chapters 3 and 4. I will give you one hard copy. If you lose the packet you will have to down load it at home
As Always if I am unclear call or text me.
Mr. Garcia
My little Chickadees,
I am so sorry for the homework this week, but be are a little behind and we need to catch up.
For those of you who forgot how the homework is to be done, do the following. Attached to this email, is a copy of the Chapter 3 and 4 Mesopotamia packets for you to download and print out.
HOW TO DO THIS HOMEWORK:
You will be doing chapter 3 and 4 this week.
On the packet are two things, Vocabulary and individual named paragraphs.
Your job is to write the definitions of all vocabulary words in the packet with all lessons on chapter 3 and 4. You do not need a dictionary, because the definitions are highlighted in yellow in your social studies book, so as you read each paragraph the definition is there.
I have put the names of each paragraph in each lesson in the chapter. Your job is to read each paragraph, and using your 6th grade mind, give me a one sentence summary of what you have read. You are giving me your opinion of what the paragraphs are about.
Every lesson in chapter 3 is a total of 3. Lessons 1, 2 and 3, each with their own vocabulary words, then the names of all of the paragraphs you will read and give a 1 sentence summary.
Every lesson in Chapter 4 is a total of 3 Lessons 1, 2 and 3, each with their own vocabulary words, then the names of all of the paragraphs you will read and give a 1 sentence summary.
Any questions call me. 310-871-3679

What is happening the week of November 18th to the 20th?
We are moving along in history, yeah, and I don’t know about you but I’m having a blast.
On Monday, all classes will be finishing up or starting the quiz on the DVD “The Bible.” Period 1 and 6 will be finishing up the quiz and continue with the next topic of the class “The Scientific Method,” by watching the video “Big AL.” Period 1, 3 and 5. Will start the video, when the quiz is finished on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.
The rest of the week will be focused on the Scientific Method, then, we will be starting Mesopotamia, when we get back from Thanksgiving Break.
At that point, we will be starting what was done at the beginning of the year with class warm-ups about the topics we will be studying for the rest of the school year. Students will be annotating warm-ups dealing with the subject we will be studying at the time.

(Mr. Garcia)
I know that I have been out for an extremely long period of time, and I am so sorry for this. Life has a way to put a wrench in any ones life. I am so happy to be back at work, and I am so thankful for the support that all of my students have been giving me during my recovery. For this bless all of you it was an important part to my recovery.
I want all of you to know that there will be a time in December that I will again be out of the class. I still have to have one more additional surgery to get 100% better. By the new year, or January I should be 100%
What is happening the week of November 4th to 8th.
Last week we started the continents map, that is due on Monday. I know this is a little stressful, but, I need to back track a bit to bring you up to date before we get to the ancient civilizations.
Students who did not finish their maps will get a "0" until you do complete this map. Remember you cannot take this map home until have corrected it. Once I correct it you go over your out line in blue or black pen, then color the map. Oceans are blue and the individual continents are any color your chose. The map does not have to look like my example as far as coloring goes. Use your own artistic endeavor. I trust you. You need to color in one direction with all the continents and Oceans, and DO NOT COLOR OVER YOUR LABLES, but around. look at the example on the site.
This week, we will be finishing up the important things on Geography, and delve into the different types of maps that is important in ancient civilizations. We will start the whole idea of Religion Versus Science and watch two movies about this topic. "The Bible" and "Big Al."
One of the movies pertain to the idea of religion, and the other movie the scientific method. In ancient history these two topics cannot be mixed together.
After all movies we see in class there will be a quiz, but during all movies I am stopping and starting giving test questions and answers that all students may use during the quiz. This means that all students should get an 'A' on all quizzes this year.
If for any reason this does not make any sense just text or call me.

All classes will be working on your Geographical map in class. I will give all students enough time a total of two hours class time to start and finish this assignment. All of you will be working together to accomplish this assignment. The more you work together, the quicker I can check it, and you can color and finish.
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY:
If needed you will have 30 minutes to finish your map. You cannot take your map home to color it if need be until I have corrected it. WHAT IS HAPPENING THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 3RD T THE 6TH.
Wow my little Chickadees, your first week of school is already over, that being said there is only 29 weeks left of school. CAN YOU BLEIEVE THAT????
Well by now, all of you should be getting use to all the ins and outs of Culver City Middle School. Classes should be set, and all of you should know your teachers, where the lunch areas is, bathrooms and where all of your classes are and the stress of starting this new school is becoming easier, right? Well I hope so, just remember of there are any problems, just let me or any other teacher know so we can hopefully help you feel a lot better.
THERE IS A LOT TO READ BUT DO IT ANYWAYS. THIS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!!!!!
5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY
On Thursday and Friday of last week we started the 5 themes of Geography. This week we are going to dive into the whole dynamics of what Geography is. We will focus on Geography's 5 Themes. This link will allow you to see the video we watched in class. It is located on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgl69wrzjDE&t=933s
Watch this a many times as you want to learn these 5 themes!
HOMEWORK:
Your first homework assignment will be given this week. This will be annotation homework of which you will be using your social studies book all of you should have received when you registered. You will never bring your book to school . I have a copy we will use in class.
Remember homework assignments are worth a tot of 5% of your overall grade, and has a specific DEADLINE when it is due. If any homework assignment is not turned in on its due date, it will not be accepted after the fact. So never take out your homework packet when at home. Do your homework in your binder, so you don't forget it.
I will always give you a hard copy of your homework packet in class. If you lose it, then you must download it from this site, and print it out yourself, I will not give you another copy.
IN CLASS WARMUPS:
Any and all in class warm ups will be eventually placed on this site. Remember any and all in class assignments can be turned in for full credit by the Midterm and or Final. This should not in any way happen because all students will have enough time before class starts to start and finish in class warm up. All of you will have 15 min to start and complete this work. NO ONE SHOULD TAKE IT HOME, BECAUSE YOU DID NOT FINISH. If you do not finish with the time given then you were not focused.
Remember In class assignments are worth 25% of your overall grade, and can be turned in at any time before your Midterm or Final for full credit. This should not happen, but you do have time. Try your best to keep up with all assignments in all classes so you don't fall behind!
6th Grade Syllabus 2019-2020
What is also attached to this site is my class syllabus. For those students who have not turn in your singed syllabus and have lost it, all you need to is download this copy and make sure that you read it then sign it and turn it in so that you get your credit
GEOGRAPHY
We will start our 7 continents map, but before that delve in a lot of geographical vocabulary. All of you will become geographical experts, I promise.
Now, if for any reason any and all of what is written looks like German, French or Greek, all you need do is text or call me to explain :)
Mr. Garcia
310-871-3679 Cell number
Let me introduce myself my name is Richard Garcia, I am one of four 6th grade social studies teacher at Culver City Middle school teaching 6th grade social studies. I started my student teaching at the middle school during the 1991-1992 school year and officially started as a teacher during the 1992-1993 school year. To date unofficially this is my 26th year and officially 25rd year at Culver City Middle School.
I am so excited for this New Year at CCMS for all new students and parents. I know how stressful this can be entering a new environment, no longer in the safety of your previous elementary school that is comfortable and safe. Now all of you head into the abyss of the unknown, not knowing what to expect. This in itself can be a monumental challenge.
I assure you that all of the new students entering this wonderful school have nothing to fear. Your are entering a family environment that will painstakingly do all their best to make you feel safe and welcomed in your new environment. This I promise you 100%.
Now I may be a bit biased, but all of you are entering the best district and middle school in the state, if not the country. Each and every one of you will get the best possible education this world has to offer, I guarantee it.
Every single teacher will do their job implanting the best education possible, but it is very important that students, as students give your best in absorbing this education, this success can be accomplished through dedication, hard work, and a drive to learn. It is you, and only you that will succeed and thrive as a CCUSD student. All of you need to know, the success is yours to have, by your hard work.
I know this is a lot to read, but it is important information!!!!
Students, let me inform you that this class will either be your favorite, or at least one of the top two favorite class you will have this year. Not to say I’m vain, but, I love my job, and don't tell anyone but I get paid for this job. I want all of you to know that I will always try to inspire you to expand your knowledge whether in school or not. I will try to burn this phrase into your minds, and pray that it takes hold in inspiring your future goals.
Confucius say’s ”Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I haven't worked in 26 years, amazing huh?
My job this year is to introduce you to the aspect of Ancient Civilization but, remember I can only touch the tip of the ice berg doing this. There is so much information about each and every civilization we will be learning this year that it is impossible to deeply get into the substance. What I will be doing is getting you ready, by introducing you to research, historical essay writing, map making and the reasons why things happened, that of course leads up to today, and how all of us live our lives.
What is needed for all of my students .
Student’s, every single one of you must understand that you have to be in school. The moment you understand and agree that school is your future, school will be fun and rewarding. Without an education all of your dreams and desires in your life will be limited. An education will open up anything and everything you may desire to do in your life, and only you, will stop this from happening, not mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, siblings, aunts, uncles or friends! You are the creator of your wants, desires and dreams, and only you can fulfill them. Remember that always!!!
Every school year is a total of 183 days put into August to June, nine months and two weeks. We are in school from 8:20 until 2:20 a total of 6 hours. Our school has block scheduling meaning each class Tuesday to Friday is 90 minutes long so, social studies, math, science, language arts, P.E., and your elective will be broken into periods.
Wednesday day and Friday will be period 2, 4 and 6, 90 minute block periods
Tuesday and Thursdays will be period 1, 3 and 5, 90 minute block periods
Monday will be called “Stack Day,” in which you will be going to all of your classes that will be 50 minutes long
What this breaks down to, is you will only have three days of any class. My students will only see me three days a week. For example. If you have me on Wednesday and Friday, I will not see you on Tuesday and Thursday, and of course if you have me Tuesday and Thursday, I will not see you Wednesday or Friday. This schedule will make it feel like the year will go by extremely fast, and of course it will.
On Monday the bell rings at 8:15, and you have 5 minutes to get to class. When period 1 ends you will again have 5 minutes to get to period 2, and the same goes with the rest of your classes. Just getting to class accounts a total of 30 minutes a day, then there is lunch which is 35 minutes. So, a total of 1 hour and 5 minutes is eating and getting to class. So on Monday you are not in class 6 hours, but 4 hours and 55 minutes.
On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday there are five 5 minute transition or 25 minutes, on top of 35 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes for PAWS, in total that is 90 minutes going to class, eating and PAWS. Subtract that from the 6 hour day and students are in class a total of 4 hours and 30 minutes. Wednesday is an early day ending at 1:35 p.m., of a 5 hour and 15 minutes of the school day, lunch is 35 minutes and three transition is 15 minutes or a total of 50 minutes, bringing your school day to only 4 hours and 25 minutes.
There is a lot of information that needs to be taught to all of you this school year and in the beginning it going to seem impossible, but do not worry, as hard as it seems all of you will adjust, and be successful as a 6th grade student. All of you are scared, excited and most of you are ready for a new school year. I have extreme confidence in all of you that you will succeed and thrive at Culver City Middle School.
Welcome, and I cannot wait to start teaching all of you Ancient History
Your wonderful and amazing Teacher
Mr. Garcia :)
