Grade Update

Hi all,

I wanted to update you all about grades. As you know, grades have been frozen at a student's Q3 grade. I wanted to let you all know that I have updated their scores on aeries for all assignments that have been assigned for distance learning. If a student ends up with a higher grade at the end of the semester based on their efforts during distance learning, then they will keep the improved grade. If it has not improved, the student will keep their Q3 grade. I am updating on aeries just so you are aware how the student is doing so far in class.

If a student has completed an assignment late, after the due date, please have them email me and let me know which assignments they have submitted. Google classroom will not notify me of new submissions when I log in. I do get notifications on my phone but they disappear and I don't always know when a student has re-submitted. So if I have to go back and re-grade an assignment, please email me and be specific with the assignment you need me to regrade.

Hope you are all doing well. Reach out to me if you have any questions.

Ms. Madrid

Assignment

Dear Parents and Students,

Due to the Coronavirus Quarantine, all learning for our classes will take place online through Google Classroom. All students are already signed up for it and parents, soon you will be too! I will be emailing all parents with requests to join the class. All assignments posted in Google Classroom should be turned in on Google Classroom, so please do not email me assignments. Students will be expected to complete a weekly warm-up, what we call "Hazlo-Ahora" for each class they have with me (SLA/SS). They are to turn in the warm ups at the end of the week. The student will then have additional assignments to complete based on the class (es) they have me. For example, SLA students should expect work to be posted for every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

  • Periods 1, 3 and 5 should check Google Classroom for work posted every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
  • Periods 2, 4, and 6 should check Google Classroom for work posted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday

I will be available for Office Hours M-F from 8:15 am-9:15 am and then again from 2:15-3:15pm. I will be checking comments on Google Classroom and responding to emails. If you want to initiate a Google Hangout with me to speak to me virtually, you may do so during those hours or you could text me on remind to let me know if another time works best.

I understand these times are difficult! We are all adjusting to this. We were not prepared for this but we are all doing our best. I will have a Q&A posted on Google Classroom for on-going questions/concerns. It is easier to respond to these questions on Google classroom than email. Some students may have the same question and it could benefit them all to see the response.

If you have not signed up to remind to receive my notifications, here are the codes to join:

Text the following number: 81010

and in the message box type in the following message:

P2 type in ----> @madridp2
P3 type in ----> @madridp3
P4 type in ----> @madridp4
P5 type in ----> @madridp5
P6 type in ----> @madridp6

Should you have any additional concerns or questions, please go ahead and email me at: [email protected]

Stay safe!

Assignment

Hi all,

I just wanted to relay information about the AP Spanish Language Exam. We have a few students who are interested in taking the AP Spanish Language Exam at the end of their 8th grade year.

Here are the facts:
*Students may register for the exam without being in an AP course
*Exam is not offered at CCMS because we do not offer AP courses at our middle school (there are middle schools across the nation that do offer AP courses though) https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/eighth-graders-taking-advance-placement-language-classes-oui/2018/05/05/d17b15a6-4e6e-11e8-84a0-458a1aa9ac0a_story.html
*Students would have to register and their testing site would be at Culver City HS or any other nearby school that does AP testing and is open to have outside/homeschooled students register
*Students would not receive that extra point to boost their GPA, only students who receive that extra boost to their GPA is those who take AP courses in 10th and 11th grade
*Students will receive college credit if they pass the exam, even as 8th graders
*Exam is not free, $100 per exam (I am attaching costs and details from the HS)
*Students will have to study for the exam on their own
*The deadline to register is next Friday, October 25th

I just wanted to relay the information to you all even though I know many students are not ready for this step. I recommend this option for students who are high native spanish speakers or high non-native spanish speakers and would like to get ahead in their coursework to have space for more AP courses in the future. If you are truly considering this option, please reach out to me to obtain the PIN number to register.

Thank you!
Ms. Madrid

Assignment

Hi all,

I apologize for the delay in posting. I had training at the beginning of the week and that put me behind.

For SLA this week students organized their notebooks and began to learn new vocabulary. While I was gone, they worked on a grammar packet that they will receive back this upcoming week on Thursday.

I asked students to bring in a Spanish book of 150 pages or more to begin to read every Monday. Rather than the students read random Spanish books every Monday, I would like them to bring the same book every Monday for 2 months. After 2 months, they should switch to a different book. I will be giving them the entire period on Monday to read. Then students will fill out a short reflection on what they read. Students may purchase the book, check it out from the school library or public library or even borrow a book from the class library we have. Students should begin to bring in a book starting tomorrow 9/15. If they do not have a book by tomorrow, that is fine, they can borrow a book from class. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Also here is my remind code if you would like to join.
Text 81010 and type in the following code and send as a message:

For period 3: @madridp3
For period 5: @madridp5

Thank you!
