Math 6 (Period 2,4)

Course Description

Math 6

Welcome to Math 6!  This class focuses on the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics

which address Standards for Mathematical Practice and Standards for Mathematical Content.

The standards stress not only procedural skills but also conceptual understanding, to make sure students are learning the critical information they need to succeed at higher levels.  Students will have many opportunities to develop conceptual understanding of various math topics, as well as become more proficient problem solvers.

Mathematical Content

The following list provides a general overview of the Standards for Mathematical Content.

  • Statistics and Data
  • The Number System
  • Ratios & Proportional Relationships
  • Expressions & Equations
  • Geometry

Please visit http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/6/introduction for a more detailed

description of what students should understand and be able to do in mathematics by the end of

their sixth grade year.

Recommended Materials

To be prepared, it is recommended that students bring the following items to math class everyday:

  • One large 3-ring binder that will be used for all academic classes. Using a divider, one section in the binder should be labeled “Math.”
  • A spiral notebook (to use in math class only) to take notes and to use for active class practice.
  • Pencils (at least 2 sharpened or mechanical)
  • Pens (red and another color)
  • Whiteboard Markers (at least 2, fine point preferable)
  • Eraser
  • Highlighter
  • Handheld pencil sharpener or pencil lead

The following guidelines have been established to create a safe and optimal learning environment.

More information will be coming soon about class procedures, homework, and our grading system. Throughout the year, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at [email protected].  I am looking forward to a successful and productive year!

Sincerely,
