Attendance

Regular attendance is required by California law and is essential to student success. Excused absences include illness, medical or dental appointments, a death in the family, or religious events. Our school's goal is a 97% Average Daily Attendance (ADA) rate — and because attendance is taken every period, even partial-day absences affect this. If your student has an appointment, please try to schedule it before or after school hours when possible.

 

Submitting an Absence
If your student will be absent, please submit your excuse using our online absence notification form. 

 

Independent Study for Extended Absences
Students can clear unexcused absences and recover missed funding through Short-Term Independent Study (STIS). To participate, you must make a request using our online absence notification form. Student must complete all assigned work during the absence, and returned  immediately upon return, for the marks to be cleared. Truancy or Excessive Absences

Students are truant when they are found off campus or out of bounds during class time without a valid excuse. Truant students may be cited by the Culver City Police Department. Teachers and administrators will handle other consequences for truancy and tardiness. Excessive truancies or absences will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB). Whenever you miss a day or partial day of school without parent/guardian permission, you are considered truant. A full day truancy will result in a disciplinary conference including your parent. A single period truancy (out of class without a pass or out of bounds) may result in detention or other disciplinary measures.

Cal. Ed. Code § 48260 (“(a) A pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than a 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof, shall be classified as a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district.”)
