Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies!  

Students will examine the Ancient World from Pre-History through the Roman Empire [Hominids & the Stone Age, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt (including Kush & Hebrews), Ancient India, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire].  While examining the history of the ancient world, students will analyze the connections among geography, government, culture, and economics. Students will also develop critical process skills for assessing issues, problem solving, decision-making, and taking civic action.

Process
  1. Choose the topic that you will be researching.
  2. Use the Web Sites found in the Resources section of this assignment and books from your school library to gather information about your topic.
  3. Create a Powerpoint presentation to show your class.
  4. Throughout the process each student must review to other presentations and have theirs reviewed twice by other classmates.
Requirements 
  1. Each PowerPoint must have a minimum of 5 slides and a maximum of 10 slides.
  2. The first slide must be a Title slide with the title of your project, your name, your class period, and the month and year in which you completed the project.
  3. At least 3 of the next slides must present key ideas from your research. You must incorporate at least 3 graphics or photographs into the presentation.
  4. ​The last slide must be a bibliography of the sources you used for your presentation.
  5. All information must be properly cited using the proper citation method.

Neolithic COMIC BOOK
 
1. Students read the text entitled From Hunter-Gatherers to Farming
2. Students complete a comic book assignment comparing the Paleolithic times with the Neolithic times
3. Each page of the comic book has 3 parts
    Part 1: The student describes one aspect of the Paleolithic Age
    Part 2: The student describes two changes made during the Neolithic Age
    Part 3: Student describes why these changes are important

This is a homework strategy designed around the art of discussion, which encourages an open dialogue between students and adult family members.

Hominid Missing Poster

A “missing” poster lets people know about something or someone who needs to be found for some reason. We’re looking for the hominids who have died out. Choose one of our 5 hominids to make a “missing” poster for. Your poster should be COLORED, NEAT, and BEAUTIFUL. Use your Hominids Chart and Hominid Rap to include the neccessary information.

Prehistoric Life Narrative
Pretend that you have been sent back in time to experience life with one of our 5 hominid groups.  How would you eat?  How would you sleep?  How would you get water?  How would you stay warm?
 
Write a journal entry describing your day in your life.  What continent do you live on?  What do your friends and family look like?  What is life like?  How do you spend your day?  What are your fears and concerns?
 
Remember, you want to demonstrate a deep knowledge and understanding of hominids and the Stone Age.  Use class resources including, your Hominid RAP, Hominids CHART, and/or Early Hominid TEXT.

The Greatest Inventors of All Time

CLOSE Read 

Close Reading is an intense analysis of the text in order to come to terms with what it says, how it says it, and what it means.  

  1. Number the paragraphs
  2. 1st Read: Circle words that you don't understand & look them up on LongmanDictionary.com
  3. 2nd Read: Highlight main points and facts (try to only highlight 3-4 short phrases in each paragraph)
  4. 3rd Read: Write a SIMPLE summaries of each paragraph in the right margin (2-3 words) & write any questions you have in the left margin
  5. Answer "Text Dependent" Questions: Meaning your answer should be supported with information found within the text

DUE: The due date for this assignment has been postponed to Wednesday 9/30 for 6th period.  6th period started the assignment with the sub and did not feel sufficiently prepared.  I will not see 6th period again till Wednesday 9/30 because of another training day this Monday (this is the last one until late October). I apologize for the confusion.
