Read the short story "The Lottery" and complete the reading questions. Be sure to cite evidence from the text to support your answer. I have also attached a link to the audiobook as well.

Students will create a google slide presentation on a specific issue that teenagers are currently having to face during the pandemic. The purpose is to inform and bring awareness to the situation. Students will need to complete their own research using two reputable sites to gather information.

Students must provide visuals in their presentations.

A rubric is attached for review. All content must be school appropriate.

Read and annotate the poem emphasizing on imagery. Choose a stanza to complete the handout attached in the assignment. I have also attached a list of figurative language for students to review.

Read and highlight words that rhyme. Color code the rhymes. (Use the same color highlighter with words that rhyme)

Attached is the links to Dr. King's speech. There is a text version with an audio link and a Youtube link to his speech. Students should watch the video first, then read the text again.

Select your favorite phrase or line as your title…THEN illustrate it! (Draw it)
-Use color, creativity, design…try to express what that phrase means or why it is so powerful or important.
-Use of technology and digital work are encouraged.
-Be prepared to explain it to your teacher or classmates.

Students are to create and illustrate a shield with elements of what their heart is comprised of. I have attached a couple of pdf templates, but you are free to create your own template.

Students waiting or done with their Socratic Seminar should be reading and annotating the poem "Guardian" attached in this assignment. There are 2 reading questions on the second page of the poem that needs to be completed. Use the highlighting options in google doc and add comments to the margins to annotate.

We will be listening and discussing the events of the "Three Miles" podcast in zoom. Attached is a Google doc where students will be answering the questions relating to the podcast.

The Final Draft of your Personal Narrative is due on Thursday/Friday.

The only thing left to do is to format you narrative into MLA format. Attached are the directions and sample of MLA format for essays. Since this is a narrative, you do not have to worry about citations or a works cited page.

If you are unable to get someone from this class to read you story and fill out the Personal Narrative Check form, have a parent/guardian or an older sibling to read and fill out the form. Use the form to revise and edit your story once more.

You can submit the form to google classroom for credit.

* I have also posted 2 sample narratives for students to review. The first example is a rough draft. The second example is the same story as the first, but has been revised and edited.

1) Read "Show, Don't Tell" document attached below.
2) In the "Show, Don't Tell Examples & Practices" document, review the examples of "Show, Don't Tell" and complete the activity. On a google doc, students will rewrite the vague sentence from the activity in a way that "shows" the scene instead of just telling about it. (Try NOT to use the words AM, IS, ARE, WAS, WERE, and THERE. Instead use actions.)

Now that you have written a lead, identified conflict, and plot out your narrative, it is time to start your first draft on a google doc. Be sure to include dialogue in your draft. I recommend that you write your narrative in first person.

* In the Notes and Materials Section, I have upload the short story "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros as an example of personal narrative written in the first person.

Create a google doc to complete the 2 activities and submit it in Google Classroom. Students must write down the complete sentences for both activities. (For the Tag Revision activity, you are replacing the words "said" and "asked" with different varieties of Dialogue Tags)

Plot - A plot is a series of events related to a central conflict or struggle.

"Because you are all writers your personal narratives will need to have a plot. Just because it happened to you doesn't mean that you can write about it!"
(Meaning: not everything that happens to you is worthy of a story because there's not always a conflict involved)

1) Read "The Three Little Pigs" and plot chart attached with the story.

2) Review your one page freewrite on your memory / life event that you have written and think about the narrative. Create a plot chart to ensure that your narrative has a conflict. If possible, print the pdf and use it to help outline your plot. If not, you can create your own on a piece of paper. Take a picture of it to submit it in google classroom. Make sure your picture is legible. On a Google doc answer the following questions and submit that for credit also

- Do you have a conflict?
- What is it?
- What is your turning point and what leads to it?
- What is your falling action and how does it lead to the resolution?
- Does the resolution fix the conflict?

1) Read the Personal Narrative Notes in the notes sections of the Narrative Unit and create a list of ten life events on which you might like to write your personal narrative. Your list is NOT to be turned in. The purpose of the list is to generate ideas for your Personal Narrative.

*I have also attached a list of possible ideas in the notes section of the unit.

2) Read The Importance of Focus in the notes sections of the Narrative Unit

3) Read the directions and sample paragraph attached in the Maggy activity. Create a google doc and list the possible smaller topics that you identified from the sample paragraph.

4) On the same google doc that you did the Maggy activity:

- Choose one memory from your brainstorming list
- Think about focus: choose one part of the event to retell in detail
- Think about your memory for several minutes, relieving it in your mind, but without writing
- Finally, on the google doc write as much as you can remembering about this focused event. Freewrite for a page in length, without worrying about paragraphs, dialogue, mechanics, etc.
-Submit the google doc for credit.

1) Freewriting - a prewriting exercise in which you write continuously for a set period of time, disregarding spelling and grammar, in order to generate ideas on a topic.

- In the comment section of this assignment, students are to freewrite for 5 minutes on this prompt: "When I write, I..." After you have completed the freewrite, set it aside for now.

2) Read and annotate "Hunting is Not Those Heads on the Wall". (If possible, I understand that students may not have access to a printer)

3) Answer questions 1-3 from the second page. (You can create a google doc to write your answers and submit it)

4) Go back and read the freewrite you wrote in the comment section of this assignment, reflect on your "watchers", and then respond to question 4. (Question 4 should also be done on the same google doc where you answered questions 1-3.

Here is the your Summative Assessment for Narrative Arc. Students will need to complete this during the zoom session. If you are absent, please schedule a time to take the assessment. Students who open the assessment outside of zoom session, the assessment will be counted as a retake with highest grade possible grade being a B.

Retake - Students are to use the Plot Outline to plot out the narrative for "The Tell-Tale Heart." Be sure to include the MAIN CONFLICT in your outline. You can print it out or draw your own, but it must have all the requirements on the PDF with the exception of having only 1 falling action. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE TWO EVENTS FOR THE FALLING ACTION. The highest grade possible for a retake is a B. There is no due date, but I will be updating grades next week and if this is not done, I will use the original score that you received on the quiz
