Pre-Algebra 6 (Period 1)

Course Description

Problem of the Week #8

Sara and Lisa want to walk to their friend’s house which is 10 miles away.
If they walk at a constant rate of 1.5 meters per second, Lisa thinks it will take them all day to get there. Sara thinks it will only take a couple of hours.
How long do you think it will take?

Note:
800 meters is about one-half mile.

Problem of the Week #6
1) In a group of 5 children, the average weight of each child was 72 pounds. When a sixth child joined the group, the average weight of each child became 73 pounds. What was the weight of the sixth child?

2) If a kindergarten teacher places her children 4 on each bench, there will be 3 children who will not have a place. However, if 5 children are placed on each bench, there will be 2 empty places. What is the smallest number of children the class could have?

Problem of the Week #5, Due Monday 12/5/11
1) A MathCounts team is made up of students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades only.  Seven students are 7th graders, eleven students are 8th graders, and one-third of the entire team are 6th graders.  How many students are on the team?

2) A study of 50 high school students showed that exactly 25 of them took Biology, exactly 20 of them took Chemistry, and exactly 12 of them took both subjects.  How many of the 50 students took neither Biology nor Chemistry?

Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to CCMS and the sixth grade year! I am very excited to start the year and begin exploring the wonderful world of math.

I use this website to update students and parents about homework assignments, project details, dates for upcoming tests and quizzes, and other general information about the class. Please check the site frequently to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in math class.

The 6th Grade Pre-Algebra Statement of Success is linked to this site (see below). Students will be receiving this handout during the first week of school and I will be asking parents to review it with their child. This handout outlines policies, procedures, and recommended supplies for our math year to run smoothly. It would be helpful for students to have the following supplies by the start of the second week of school:

- One large 3-ring binder that will be used for all academic classes. Using a divider, one section in the binder should be labeled “Math.”
- A spiral notebook
- Material bag of supplies (with sharpened pencils, blue/black pens, one red pen (for correcting), a handheld pencil sharpener, and glue stick)

Students will use the spiral notebook in class everyday. This notebook will contain all class notes, project assignments, daily warm-ups, and many other forms of class work. Students will also be asked to record their nightly homework in the notebook to ensure that assignments are easily found during the next day of class.

I know the beginning of school can be an exciting (and perhaps anxious) time for parents and students. Please send me an email if you need any help in settling in to the CCMS routine.  I hope to see you at Back to School Night on Thursday September 22.

I’m looking forward to a wonderful school year!

Kindly,
Emily Vandever

MATH PLACEMENT
Students have been placed in either Math 6 or Pre-Algebra based on the results of the math placement test they took at the end of 5th grade.

Students who are currently enrolled in MATH 6, yet feel that they should be placed in the Pre-Algebra class, will have one final opportunity to take the placement test after school (2:30) on Thursday, Sept 8 in Room 121. Students who are already enrolled in Pre-Algebra do not need to re-take the placement test.  This will be the last time the placement test will be given for this school year. The test will take approximately one hour to complete.
