Holt – Literature and Language Arts
Holt – Handbook
The Watsons go to Birmingham – 1963 (will be provided during the school year)
Freak the Mighty (will be provided during the school year)
SSR book (chosen by the student, must be approved by the teacher)

DAILY MATERIALS:
Students should bring the following items to class every day: two pencils, two ball point pens (black or blue ink only), a three-ring binder with three dividers, notebook paper, an SSR book, and completed homework. The notebook dividers should be labeled Vocabulary, Reading Logs, and Notes and Coursework.

HOMEWORK:
Students should expect to receive up to 30 minutes of homework per night. Homework is to be completed in pencil only. Homework must include a proper heading with relevant page numbers at the top of the page and the student’s first and last name, the due date, and the period in the upper right-hand corner of the page. This is to be done before you begin an assignment, not when you are asked to turn your work in. Students are to record homework assignments in their time-trackers while in class and should not rely on the online postings.

TARDY POLICY:
Students not sitting quietly in their assigned seats when the bell rings will be marked tardy.

LATE WORK AND MAKE-UP WORK:
Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. Late homework assignments will not be accepted unless there is an excused absence or special circumstance. Students who are absent have one day to turn in work for each day of absence. Assignments that are accepted late will receive a 10% deduction for each day they are late.

RULES:
Students are expected to work quietly at their desks and must not talk or disturb other students. No student is to leave his or her desk or talk without first raising his or her hand and getting permission from the teacher. Items not listed under daily materials are not permitted in the classroom. All rules outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook apply.

GRADING:
The grading scale and categories are as follows:

A = 90% to 100% 10% Homework
B = 80% to 89% 10% SSR/Reading Logs
C = 70% to 79% 15% Vocabulary Development
D = 60% to 69% 20% Grammar/Writing Conventions
F = 59% or below 20% Reading Comprehension
25% Writing/Literary Response and
Analysis
