Gifted And Talented Education Testing/Retesting Protocol
Students in Culver City are tested in third grade to become eligible for the Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) program. Once they qualify they are assigned to the classes with GATE trained teachers the following year. These students become eligible for field trip opportunities (at a cost to the family) and special activities at the school.
New to the district or enrolled after 3rd grade
If a student is new to the district or was not enrolled in Culver City Unified School District, CCUSD, in third grade, they must complete the application for GATE testing the first week of school. This form is to be turned in to Mrs. Arlis Allen the GATE coordinator in room 120, dropped off in the Culver City Middle School front office, given to the student’s counselor or to the district GATE coordinator Mrs. Diane Randall at the District Office. Please include an email address on the application if you would like to know it was received.
New students are eligible to be tested during the first two weeks of September. Students will be scheduled to test and must arrive on time for their testing session. Testing may occur before, after or during school hours. If a student qualifies, they will receive a new schedule to ensure they are in the classes of GATE trained teachers.
Retesting
Students desiring to retake the GATE test may do so in the Spring. Students are expected to arrive on time for their test. Retesting applications must be turned in by March 1st to Mrs. Arlis Allen the GATE coordinator in room 120, dropped off in the Culver City Middle School front office, given to the student’s counselor or to the district GATE coordinator Mrs. Diane Randall at the District Office.
Students taking the test at this time will receive a letter during the summer to notify them if they qualified or not.. If the student scored at or above the 95th percentile they will be eligible for the GATE program in the Fall. Scores will not be included in the letter, but can be requested from Mrs.Randall at the district office, please allow two weeks to be notified when you can pick up the exact score earned on the test. Students can retest in the Spring of their 6th or 7th grade year to determine eligibility for the following year.
